A Siren's Song - Session One
General Summary
We find our party of adventurers waking up in a dry chamber of a cave system known as the Abyssal Depths. With their memories seemingly wiped and all their gear gone save for the clothes on their backs, they search confusedly for a way out. Drawn by a shimmering light, Nabia investigates and touches what appears to be a magical orb. A fragment of the memories of what led the party to their predicament becomes apparent to her. She convinces the rest of the party to touch the orb to see what happens, each receiving a portion of fragmented memory that forms a complete picture of trust and betrayal.
Having learned what they could from the orb, the party’s next course of action is escaping the cave system, a problem for Feeshi as he is unable to breath underwater. Kodos volunteers to go ahead and check to see if there is an air pocket further ahead. He ties himself off with a rope that is found nearby and begins the swim. After approximately 150 feet, Kodos surfaces in the next room which is lit dimly by a glowing fungus/slime. This fungus is known as Nathrak and while it is known that it is used in the distillation of the local liquor known as Bul, there is a rumor that in its purest form as it is found in this cave, it can allow a being to go without needing to take a breath for an extended period.
With nowhere dry to store it, Kodos places a handful of the Nathrak in his mouth and heads back to the first chamber. Upon returning he spits the Nathrak out into his hand and gives it to Feeshi to consume. Feeshi, not actually knowing that Kodos was holding the Nathrak in his mouth, reluctantly consumes the fungus and finds that he does not feel the need to take a breath after several minutes. With a solution to their problem, the party decides to follow the current back out where they return to the chamber with the glowing Nathrak.
After investigating the chamber, a useless bucket and a glass, corked bottle are found. Feeshi fills the bottle with a healthy supply of the Nathrak for what could be an arduous journey out of the cave system. Before continuing, Lalrihyn hears a faint whispering of “Are you lost?” followed by a playful giggling. She whispers to Kodos asking if he too hears the whispering. They turn to see a water nymph in the water.
By all accounts the water nymph wants to help. She speaks of a bad man who wishes to control all aspects of the water realm. She informs the party that they were brought here to undergo a ritual, but if they were to abandon the ritual, she would help them leave the cave system. Kodos did not want to believe what the nymph was offering, but by all accounts, she was being honest.
With the agreement, the water nymph jetted away leaving a trail of bioluminescence that led the party out of the cave system and out into the open ocean. Surfacing, Feeshi recognizes the island they are on as the Ember Isle, a volcanic island with Crimson Peak situated upon it. He also notices a whisp of smoke in the air as if from a campfire.
The party approaches the shoreline and works their way forward. Feeshi takes to the trees and notes four halflings, known as Emberlings, an evil tribe, around a campfire, two asleep. He scrawls messages in two separate coconuts and throws them down the beach to notify the other three party members of the situation. After doing so, he manages to drop a coconut each on the sleeping Emberlings, killing them both immediately. The other two attribute this to idiocy for sleeping under a coconut tree.
Eventually, combat is engaged with the remaining two Emberlings and they are dispatched, only the last with a bit of trouble. They tie up the final Emberling and interrogate him, but only after searching his body and finding a note that reads, “Here is your payment. – Malachi.” After a bit of back and forth, the party kills the final Emberling. Nearby, the party recovers their missing gear from a large chest.
With the threat of more Emberlings to come, the party takes off for a masted boat masted boat that Feeshi saw from the tree tops. With great care, they find themselves at a lagoon with access to the open sea. They approach the boat carefully, but without trouble, however, Feeshi senses that there is someone behind the door that leads belowdecks. Trying all manner of ideas to lure the individual out, finally the door is opened by our party and a disheveled and malnourished human named Joseph appears. He happens to be the ships cook, but more importantly, he is a slave to his master Aelorin Wavecrest who is currently hunting on the Isle.
The party commandeers the boat and assigns themselves appropriate roles:
Nabia: ship’s captain
Feeshi: first mate
Lalrihyn: Bosun
Kodos: Surgeon
Joseph: Cook
Unassigned: Quartermaster
The party is on their way and sets sail for Coral Cove and we fall into our respective roles…
