Carvahn

Musician, Inventor of the electric violin.   Carvahn has believed in the power of music ever since his awakening, when he heard Empress Hira's singing for the first time. She had been instructed by the dragon storyteller Kella'Vel in how to sing while she waited for her siblings to awaken, and when he awoke to hear the beautiful, welcoming melody of her song, he would chase that sound for as long as he may live. If you were to ask him about his greatest songs he would tell you that they weren't good enough. At first, he spent his time learning how to sing, as his fellow kobolds began to hatch and build a community, a society, and eventually a flourishing advanced culture. As they developed new and exciting machines and technologies, he devised new and exciting ways to create music.

His first creation was a stringed musical instrument that had four strings and a rounded wooden body, narrowed at the middle and with two f-shaped sound holes, which was played with a stick that also had strings that he called a bow. He loved his creation and spent many long hours learning how to get it to make the sounds he wanted. He went on to continue making music and inventing things for many years, such as the piano and steel drums. As there were only a few thousand kobolds, and they did not have the ability to reproduce, many of them were unique, and had skills that gave them more of a reputation than others.

Carvahn was one such kobold, becoming extremely popular during the war, as many needed his songs to keep their spirits up in the face of certain destruction. When they were initially chased into reality, he went into a depressive slump, suffering from a severe case of writer's block, due to the loss of his home. For many years not a word was heard of his music, until one day after they had migrated to the titan, Incontinence, he held a grandiose concert in celebration of their newfound safety that both explained what he had been dealing with the past many years and encouraged those who remained that they had made it this far.

It spoke of the trauma of nearly being killed during the escape from Chandra (The Realm of Dragons). After his narrow survival, he found love in his Sou'lah Gloria in their newfound haven, the city of New Chandra. It spoke of how, for many years, he had only made music for her to hear, and they had been happy. But disaster is never far behind, and when Gotok'jhi's forces finally found their hidden utopian city in reality, they caused such devastation that every kobold who survived lost someone. In a single day a population of several thousand was culled to a few hundred. Carvahn lost Gloria that day, when she was crushed by the debris of a crumbling building before his eyes. He tried to take his own life that day but luckily, he failed, and when he awoke, he was on the giant back of one of the kobolds' closest allies, one of the Last Dragons named Dor'Abu. The Empress herself had saved his life, and implored him to make music again, for all those who had lost someone. He made her a promise and since that day, has been known throughout the city as a maestro of insurmountable musical talent.

Nice read and pretty interesting character. It is great that the empress prevented his death and caused him to become even greater through adveristy. I wonder however how old he actually is? He seems to have been around since the start of the kobolds?

Feel free to check my new world Terra Occidentalis if you want to see what I am up to!

Yes. The kobolds are all actually around the same age, as they all hatched from their eggs at the same time, some just hatched before others.

"making music and inventing things" — YES!

Now it's time for the awkward wave.

So glad the empress saved him! I hope he finds happiness again in his music :(

That was a very neat and melancholic story; the one people would tell in turns by the campfire to scare away the darkness of the night. And in a sense, the music he played gave his people the courage to live through the daily struggles of the war.   The uniqueness of each and every kobold is a nice touch, and I love that you emphasised that. It made me wonder what other unique traits of famous artisans were known among the Kobold kind?   Now, after he awoke to the song of Hira and "he vowed to chase that sound for as long as he may live", then found love in Gloria, does that mean he broke his vow or was the vow not that of love but artistic astonishment and praise?   I noticed that Chandra is both the name of the goddess and that of a dragon realm. This was a bit confusing and slowed my momentum down. But since there are no links and tooltips in the main body of the text, I assume this could be intentional to keep it clean?   At the beginning, Empress Hira sings while waiting for her siblings to awake, then Carvahn awakes and waits for other kobolds to hatch. Since the storyteller Kella'Vel was a dragon, I assumed Empress Hira was too. The information in the sidebar proved me wrong, but it was not clear from the text itself. I think tooltips or @ mentions could clear that and other possible misunderstandings, plus provide additional information.   Thank you for an exciting read!

Thanks for the advice! I'll have to make some edits, and apply these tips to some other articles that are lacking in the same way. I could have clarified that it was the sound he fell in love with and not the singer. The Empress seeming like a dragon is both amusing and thought-inspiring (she's quite the woman and no doubt exudes the majestic presence of a dragon). Being clearer with such details that I consider "obvious" is something I definitely have to work on. :D

I like that Carvahn represents how people can overcome adversities and grow from them. It's a nice concept that some Kobolds have unique skills that help them gain notoriety and help the community.   A nice work :) thank you

You have an interesting read here, but I have so many questions now.   Why cant kobolds have children? how long did they exist outside reality to go from relatively nothing to an advanced society? Do they have a name for the war that sent them to reality? (i did read the kobold article, which provided some answers, but also more questions)   Depending on the type of music he wrote, I would potentially change " not a word was heard of his music" to "not a NOTE was heard..." but either can work, he just seemed more involved with instruments than singing to me.   Good job on your bard.

Feel free to stop by some of my WorldEmber articles if you want. My favorites are The Book of the Unquiet Dead, Outpost of the Moons, and The Emerald Hills. Feedback is always appreciated.

Asking an author detailed questions about his world, now you really know how to make my day! I'll have to build some more articles to make this information more accessible, but the kobolds were created without the ability to reproduce, thus gender to them is more of a concept they were taught, and adopted from the dragons. Although they might call themselves male or female, these titles actually mean very little to them, as they have no real bearing on their day to day lives. I am currently building a more in depth description of the war and what happened in Chandra to cause them to run away. If you're interested in dragons, and the inventive power of kobolds definitely check it out once it has been posted.

Nice character! He and the rest of the kobolds had a pretty tragic life :( I'm interesting in learning more about his relationship with Gloria and the empress now :D
