Issue 4: Meet the Protectorate
General Summary
After telling their story to Chevalier, our heroes our led into a conference room where the rest of the super-hero team the Protectorate was waiting. After a brief discussion, Emily Piggot, the director of the PRT enters the room and chides Chevalier for not inviting her to the meeting.
After everyone hears their story, the skeptical Armsmaster requests that they tell it again, this time while being monitored by an advance Tinker-made lie detector. The party complied, and the Protectorate was convinced.
During the discussion, the party got an eye-opening look at what being an official super-hero really looks like. There was red-tape and pointless restrictions everywhere, and every conversation eventually pivoted to money. The Director showed little concern for the disaster at hand; only showing interest in how the Protectorate would be perceived by the public; and most of what the PRT in general said sounded like a lie.
The Protectorate themselves were more of a mixed bag.
Chevalier was a Breaker/Tiinker hybrid who could dramatically increase the size and strength of his weapons and armor while ignoring their increased weight; allowing him to maneuver quickly in a suit of five-ton armor. He was a boyscout, with blond hair, perfect teeth, and the manner of classic golden age era super-hero. He was in active denial the Laserdream - the groups leader who has been missing for ten months - was almost certainly dead. It was very sad, but the way the rest of the group indulged his denial was almost kind of sweet.
Assault was a Breaker who could manipulate the forces of movement. He could send a person or heavy object flying across the room with a touch of his finger, or even fire himself through the air like a meat bullet. He seemed to think the whole thing was hilarious, and he laughed even harder whenever somebody got worked up. The party wondered what the hell was wrong with him. There's a rumor that he used to be a villain.
Battery was a Brute/Mover hybrid who could "charge up" to gain short-lived bursts of speed, strength, and even size. She was friendly and naive, absentmindedly using the Protectorate's real names instead of code-names and carelessly spilling classified information left and right. She and Assault were married.
Armsmaster was a combat-Tinker who specialized in micro-technology, and his weapons were crammed full of myriad gadgets. He was abrasive and intensely unpleasant, grunting and snorting in disapproval almost every time anyone spoke.
With the exception of Assault and Battery, who are married; none of them seemed to particularly like or respect one another. Even the socially illiterate Abe could see that there at no point were any of them on the same page.
Still, without the PRT and their Protectorate; our heroes had no way of stopping the incoming cataclysm.
