Hanku Pukuri

Hanku Pukuri was the first Pukuri to rise to power in Whare Maona. His ascent to power was marked by a ruthless coup in which he, along with the aid of two other Ariki, overthrew the previous ruling family. To safeguard his own rule from a similar fate, Hanku established a heavily fortified portion within the Whare exclusively for himself and his family. This initiated the tradition of surrounding the Pukuri family only with trusted guards, who remained by their side at all times.
Hanku ruled for nine years before his, unexpected death, passing the mantle of leadership to his eldest son, Porang Pukuri. His legacy was a foundation for the Pukuri family's dominance in Whare Maona.
