Arcane Chancellor

A title within The Institute of Wizards given to heads of arcane universities under their jurisdiction. An arcane chancellor has a say within the Institute, since it's a well-regarded position amongst wizards and considered wholly necessary for an aether-gifted child's upbringing.    The quality and size of the universities they manage can vary enormously. Their definition of a "university" can encompass something as basic as a small house with a class of 10 students, so long as the chancellor is registered and approved by the Institute. This tends to be because wizards are regarded suspiciously by their surrounding communities, so applicants are reluctant in some areas. A lack of students can also stem from the rural setting of most universities, away from "worldly distractions", which a wizard is taught to abhor. Due to their size and seclusion, they can be mistaken for monasteries.

Cultural Significance

Arcane Chancellors guide apprentices to their full potential and, as wizards see it, the most meaningful lives possible. An ineffective Arcane Chancellor is charged with corrupting the youths in their care - even if their behaviour wasn't to blame.    They also hold high office within The Institute of Wizards, able to vote and discuss internal policy at a level most wizards would only aspire to. For most, it is the highest rank a wizard can achieve without needing to directly challenge Krupin's authority.   For most aether-ignorant people, forced to look inward from the outside, their vision of the Arcane Chancellor is hazy. A mysterious figure who they've been told will put their exceptional yet troubled children to good use. Not only that, but the way they carry themselves - with pride, despite doing little for the towns they live in - suggests an air of superiority locals dislike. Though most wouldn't voice it, since Aether Decay, curses and losing their children are very real consequences, Chancellors are rarely welcome anywhere but the Institute.
