What began as a review of the Antarctic Treaty System quickly ended with its abandonment.

Even before talks started, Argentina made aggressive claims and colonization of the Antarctic Peninsua. This set off a "rush" of territorial claims from Chile, the United Kingdom, Russia, Ukraine, and the United States. This was quickly followed by skirmishes in Queen Maud Land among the Norwegians, Russians, and South Africans.   Meanwhile, Australia and New Zealand secured their claims, and along with France, Ireland, Great Britain and the United States, entered into a new treaty of cooperation, economic exploitation, and common settlement in those regions.
