In an attempt to reconstruct the Russian Empire of the old Soviet Union, the Russian oligarchs and their president, Vladimir Putin, invade the European democracy of Ukraine.   While historians believe that Putin was attempting to assert Russian power, the aggression actually backfired by solidifying European unity, politically, economically, and even militarily. Historians see this event as the beginning of the rise of the European Union's power, significance, and, most importantly, self-reliance from the declining Anglo-sphere of both the United Kingdom and the United States.   Yet even in the face of the unification of European power and NATO resolve, the use of horrific weapons of terrible destruction laid waste to the major Ukranian cities, including massacres in Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Odessa resulting in hundreds of thousands of civilian deaths.
