Great Compromise
The Great Compromise was a political agreement about the succession to the Golden Throne of Bartol in the wake of the death of King Radek Ralto in AF 398.
Radek had only one child, his daughter Alaysreh. Bartol tradition (though many think it is law) holds that only men are eligible to rule as king, with their wives being their Queen-Consorts. Since there was no direct male line to inherit, by tradition the crown should have passed to his brother, Steffen, who had no male heirs at the time. However, for a not-short list of reasons (including possible madness), Steffen was not seen as a suitable candidate.
During the reign of the Ralto Kings, House Keranen had continued to strive for power and access in the royal court, mostly successfully. Robert Keranen was an advisor to the Throne at the time of Radek's death, and suggested in Council that the current leader of House Arenthal
, Tybalt, was a very suitable candidate. After some wrangling, it was agreed that Tybalt Arenthal would wed Alaysreh Ralto, thus bringing the line of succession back among the traditional Great Houses of Bartol.
As a side part of this deal, Robert Keranen became First Minister/Chancellor. Additional changes that were the result of negotiation were:
- Kyward Ralto became the Prince/Princess of Valdmar. This was done to enhance the power of Clan Ralto after losing direct power over the Kingdom. Kyward was granted the position by royal writ after Tybalt was crowned.
