The Mother Tree

An enormous tree in Nevuchar Springs, even larger than Azenwrath the Grandfather Treant.   The Vuchar River somehow has its headwaters in the Nocturnal Sea, which doesn't make any sense on maps; the Mother Tree is the reason. She stands on a rocky cliff, and her long roots reach down the side of the cliff and into the breakers of the Nocturnal Sea. She pulls the seawater up her roots like a reverse waterfall, and it pours out from a hollow in her lower trunk to form the Vuchar River.   Rose sensed that the tree was older than almost anything else around it; older than Darkon itself, older than the Nocturnal Sea, older than anything but the Mists. She also sensed the presence of a powerful dryad that was partly undead, and that the salt water of the Nocturnal Sea was fresh when it poured out as the Vuchar.   The Nocturnal Sea side of the Mother Tree contains offerings of skulls, bones, and dead flowers, while the Vuchar River side holds offerings of fresh flowers, fruit, and other signs of life. There are hymns and prayers carved into her trunk in druidic, elven, and Sylvan:   We give thanks to the Mother Tree, The mother of the living and the dead. Cradling death in her left arm and life in her right She nurtures her children through the Veil...   And other things along those lines.   There's a statue of a woman at the base of the tree. Her right side, which is on the side of the town and the Vuchar River, is alive, and she holds a cornucopia in the crook of her arm. Her left side, toward the Nocturnal Sea, is rotted and skeletal, and she cradles a skull in her left arm.   The elves are extremely protective of the Mother Tree. Nevuchar Springs is remarkably underdeveloped for a port town, and a large part of that seems to be diverting visitors away from her.
