The Stone Forest--Hazlan
General Summary
You examined the box holding the brain; it was made of very old, very high-quality oak and had some runes on it. Between detect magic and spellcraft, Rose figured out that the box had some kind of constant abjuration effect on it, as well as a lingering aura that she associated with Lucia. She couldn't figure out what was going on with the encased brain beyond the fact that it was powerful magic and that needed to be triggered somehow to take effect. The whispering got louder when the box and the scroll were closer together, and other wooden objects didn't seem to be affected, so you suspected that it was some kind of reaction between the wcroll and enchanted wood.
To your relief, the sky stopped being purple shortly after you left Ramulai. Between Ramulai and Toyalis, you found yourself walking through an entire forest that had been turned to stone along with all the wildlife in it, seemingly in an instant. Rose cast speak with plants and found, mercifully, that the stone trees seemed to be dead. The box and scroll started shaking violently, and the box snarled "die, die, die, die, die." Rose tried using speak with plants to talk to the box, asking what should die. The box replied "flesh."
[Btw, Kris, since the duration on that is eight minutes I'm ruling that it was only one use of speak with plants.]
After you passed through the Stone Forest and through Toyalis, you were traveling through a boggy, blighted-looking forest with bizarrely colored trees on your way to Sly-Var. You heard screaming up ahead, and when you went forward, you saw two trees, one with long limbs like a weeping willow and one veined with a sickly green light. There were four bizarrely mutated people struggling to escape the grabbing, strangling limbs of the trees, plus one lying at the willow's trunk, apparently dead. I am putting in pictures of all these bastards because I spent WAY too long scouring FX makeup pictures on Pinterest (and finding one guy from House of the Dragon).
This is the partially petrified man who the willow was strangling and who managed to escape. He has a wand that cast some kind of damaging evocation spell, but he can't always make it work. He yelled for everyone to run and they did, so he might be the leader.
This is the woman with the tentacles coming out of her face who threw something at oen of the trees to cast fireball.
This woman survived thanks to Constance pulling her free from the tree with the green veins.
These two got killed by the weeping willow. RIP these two.
You were able to rescue three of the people without getting killed yourself. Hooray! The trees are still alive, but they're rooted in place and couldn't follow you and the three survivors when you ran into the forest.
