Gehenna
Between the realms of Hell and Hades lies the bleak eternity of Gehenna. This collection of floating mountains lies in a dark void full of smoke, steam, and dangerous volcanic gasses. The home of the Yugoloths and Barghests, this plane is unattrative to most and becomes a home of convincence for those with nowhere else to go. Gehenna is composed of four floating mountains which orbit a black hole known as the Hellspawn Maw which leads directly to the Astral Sea. The river styx also flows through the plane leading to Avenus, with a gateway also present to Hades.
The gravity of Gehenna is at a 45 degree angle due to the prescence of the Hellspawn Maw. This gravity is easily acclimatised to once a creature has lived here long enough, but transitioning between the gravities is known to cause severe disorinetation.
Geography
Gehenna's four layers resemble mountains or volcanos in staggered orbit beneath each other, all surrounding the black hole that is the closest thing the plane gets to a sun. Expelled light from the other end of the Hellspawn Maw casts a dim light across the four layers, with the volcanic nature of the four layers providing a brighter light closer to the surface.
Khalas
The first layer of Gehenna, Khalas is a large mountain and volcanically active. At its peak, a vast caldera houses the Sea of Lost Souls, a part of the River Styx, which sends the river of the damned down its slope where it forms a natural portal to Avernus in the Nine Hells. There are three faces to Khalas - the Dark Vale, the Abyssal Face, and Styxbank which contains the Spawning Rift. Multiple rivers can be found in Khalas, which are constantly boiling and only inhabitable by Hydroloths or pyroclastic creatures such as steam mephits. This gives a heavy layer of steam that forms low lying clouds across the plane. Since Khalas is tidally locked to the Hellspawn Maw, the Dark Vale is the side which is always facing away from the minimal light expelled from the black hole. This gives this face a dark and murky atmosphere, with the only light avaialable coming from lava lakes or external sources. The Dark Vale is incredibly steep, with the only 'flat' lands found towards the very edge of the mountain where Stench Kows can be found grazing. Lava carved canyons, steep cliffs and rocky slopes are commonplace. The Abyssal face lies closest to the Hellspawn Maw, The side of Khalas ressembles a volcanic hellscape with minimal rivers and fequent spontaneous volcanic erruptions and pyroclastic flows. Large rocks of obsidian and other volcanic stones can be found. This face was traditionally held by demonic forces from the Abyss but recently they have all but disapeared, with yugoloth factions moving in to take their place. Styxbank lies between The Dark Vale and the Abyssal face, and is a war strewn volcanic bog with a green and red haze carrying over its highest peaks with its lower points covered in soul filled waters from the River Styx. The Styx flows from the Sea of Lost Souls at the peak of Khalas and divides Styxbank in half. Most of the blood war battles that have occured in Gehenna occured here and the scars of the conflict litter its landscape.Chamda
Chamda is the second layer of Gehenna and is the most volcanic layer of the plane. The constant volcanic erruptions mean only the most desparate of denizens will live here. Because of this hostile landscape, the Arcanoloths make their home within the Arcane Tower which can only be accessed by approved portals or by those daring to cross the violent landscape of Chamda. It is rumoured pyroclastic dragons live within the deep magma lakes and flows. The constant smoke and debris errupting from these volcanic funnels mean any creature without adequate protection will likely be blinded and deafened whilst on this layer.Mungoth
The third layer is a land of falling ash and snow. The furnaces of this layer are buried deep underground with a labyrinth of magma formed tunnels and caves covering the inner most layer. The Cold nature of this plane means the falling vapour from Khalas forms into snow and constantly covers the slopes before it eventually pours off the layer, evaporates, and forms the cycle all over again.Krangath
The fourth and final layer of Gehenna is a dead volcano floating far beneath the other layers. The temperature here reaches deadly lows and no mortal creatures inhabit this place. The orichs god Shargass is believed to hold his divine domain here where the souls of powerful assassins reside.Localized Phenomena
Cruel Hindrance
The plane’s cruel nature makes it difficult for visitors to help one another. Whenever a visitor casts a spell with a beneficial effect, including a spell that restores hit points or removes a condition, the caster must first make a DC 10 Charisma saving throw. On a failed save, the spell fails, the spell slot is expended, and the action is wasted.
