Lintague Labyrinth

An account by Connor Wentworth

Map designed by pinksparklesJ using Campaign Cartographer 3.
The Lintague Labyrinth is an old burial chamber that was built by the Maji. Named for its proximity to Lintague, the labyrinth looks like a grassy mound from the outside. Closer inspection reveals a stone door in the side of the mound, leading into a stone structure under the grass.

Purpose / Function

This structure appears to be an elaborate burial chamber, built to inter and honor fallen Maji (and also, most likely, to discourage non-magic users from defiling the graves). Maji remains are not distinct from any other human remains, but many signs point to this being a Maji burial chamber, from the magical illusions placed as deterrents, to the Majimonsters depicted on the coffins. Such a depiction on the coffin of a non-magical person would be massively disrespectful, as it would probably indicate how one died rather than how one lived. There are many indications of people honoring the dead here, including urns filled with riches and trinkets at the base of the coffins. (2)

Alterations

Not all of the labyrinth's deterrents are architectural. Mid-way to the center of the labyrinth is a floor-to-ceiling wall of mushrooms! (3) Closer inspection of this wall, reveals it to be merely an illusion, meant to covey to the viewer that they can make it no further into the labyrinth. I looked and looked for the source of this strange magic, but could not find its origin. Perhaps the Maji could anchor spells in space and not just to physical objects?   The entryway to the central chamber where Lucien Henry is buried is crumbling somewhat. (5) I had to be very careful entering and even then I was afraid it might collapse behind me and leave me entombed with Sir Henry! Fortunately for me, it did not, but I would not be surprised to find a cave-in should I ever revisit this labyrinth.

Architecture

The labyrinth is made of stone bricks, arranged in a dome structure. The interior is laid out in winding corridors with many dead ends. This design is probably intended to disorient and deter the uninitiated.   There is little in the way of decoration inside, except on the tombs, which have elaborate carvings of their occupants and their Majimonsters along with inscriptions in Orgenic.

History

Research indicates that this building was probably constructed by Maji, who were forced out of Lintague during The Fall of the Maji, to inter those that fell in the conflict.   Local legend, Lucien Henry is entombed here in the center of the labyrinth. (6) On his sarcophagus is a carved likeness of himself in heavy armor. One hand rests lightly on his sword, which points toward his feet, and the other hand is palm up with a depression carved into the palm the exact size to hold the squat glass bottle that sits in it. The bottle can be easily picked up from its socket, but there appears to be nothing in it. It's very curious; I've never seen anything quite like it. How interesting to think about what such a thing could signify.

Majimonsters Encountered Here

For all its designs to keep out humans, Majimonsters seem to have no problem entering the labyrinth. I have encountered Lumishroom, Unpossum, Gravecloak, and Doomwing in its twisting corridors. They seem to like congregating in the dead ends (1) and near the illusory mushrooms (3 & 4).
