Volcanar (/VOL:can:ar/)

The Obsidian Arbiter

Overview

Volcanar is an ancient being from a primordial age when the Primal Elements still ran wild on Marus. This slumbering titan of the smoldering depths once laid waste to all that dared tempt its molten wrath, with each of its mighty battles forming island chains in its destructive wake. That was before time and the veneration of the Pa'Nui saw that violent rage tempered into a dormant retribution. The Crabfolk have revered this ancient Divine since long before recorded history and some even claim their Exarch created the Realm's first islands. The Obsidian Arbiter, as it became known to Humanity, held fearsome power wielded with impunity as it acted as judge to all life on Marus... even the Divines who sought to rival him were not safe from his judicial court. When Draxis, pregenitor of the Marati, committed a grievous sin against the sea, it was Volcanar who hunted the criminal down and imprisoned him in an inescapable cage. Juhnmuk Prison still holds the Monkey King today and is one of the few places outside the Strait of Embers that is subject to the direct imperial judgement of the Exarch's sacred laws. Laws built upon a harsh vision of unyeilding justice that leaves no place for argument or compromise. When Caydon Rel ascended, the Obsidian Arbiter cast its judgement down upon Marus and wept for all those lost as it cut a burning scar across the Realm. It would later be approached by NemeN to form the Seabound Covenant Covenant and act as the looming threat that ensured the cooperation of its members.

First it wept, with tears like warm rain filled with sorrow. Then it raged, with tears like needles full of bitter pain. When the storm finally passed... it was as if the Realm had been cleaved in two by the titan's burning blade. Yet still it weeps, even now, turning the skies crimson with fire and boiling the sea with its fury.

History

Volcanar's true history is steeped in the obscurity of time. They were known to have once been an Elemental who arose to prominence in Marus' most primordial age. When Humanity came to Marus and the Kaelic Sailors inevitably clashed with the Realm's natives, it was Volcanar who orchestrated the tentative peace that would then stand for the coming centuries. They remained a neutral pillar amongst the myriad of conflicts, well respected by all parties for the fair judgement. The Obsidian Arbiter's greatest act was his judgement over Draxis for the heinous crimes he committed against the sea and her inhabitants. Over a hundred islands were said to have formed the day that Volcanar chased down the Monkey King and erected Juhkmuk Prison around him. When the world was remade, the holy sea began to boil and tears of fire wept from the sky as Volcanar lamented the innocent souls lost. Only the Seabound Covenant saved Caydon Rel from retribution. The Obsidian Arbiter would become its binding force and the threat that kept its members honest and true to their word.

Holy Symbol
Represented by a set of obsidian scales whose sides are balanced with a violet flame and a mummified heart. These scales are believed to represent the Divine's fair judgement, while the violet flames depicts their wrath, and the mummified heart shows their mercy.

Tenants of Faith

The worship of the Obsidian Arbiter is ancient and steeped in archaic traditions practiced by many who seek truth and justice. The doctrine of this ancient Divine is spread by travelers who have safely traversed the Strait of Embers.

  1. Judge The Guilty, For Only The Innocent Have Earned My Protection.
  2. Doom The Wicked, For Only The Honorable Have Earned My Mercy.
  3. Ruin The Oathbreaker, For Only The Truthful Have Earned My Trust.

The few Sophonts that worship directly at the feet of The Obsidian Arbiter study ancient law to become their Justicars. Each of these priests fervently follows their Divine's command to seek out and pass judgment over injustices.

Seabound Covenant

Volcanar founded this divine covenant when NemeN approached him after Caydon Rel's rise to power; it establishes common laws across the seas, divides territories among the powerful, and assigns duties to the affiliated deities and clergy.

Duties

The Obsidian Arbiter, and his clergy, act in the name of law and order for the people of Marus. They are intensely focused on maintaining the Gifted hierarchy, the diplomacy between great powers, and enforcing the ancient oaths between Divines. Their influence is found among:
  • Diplomats, Negotiators, and Orators.
  • Executioners, Guardsmen, and Privateers.
  • Judges, Historians, and Noblemen.

Description & Depictions

Volcanar, when not depicted as nothing more than a looming volcano, is often portrayed as a charcoal-skinned androgynous figure with veins of liquid fire coursing through its broad shoulders. Its fiery hair splays out like a lion's mane behind it and encircles a stern face etched by difficult choices. Its fierce gaze, burning with the fire of a world's heart, makes you feel compelled to speak true and honest. It is often shown wearing fine robes made of scaled gold and laden with jewels that gleam like minature suns themselves. While its strong hands hold fast to a set of obsidian scales perched on the end of a long staff that crackles with the dark fires of judgment.

Ah, I think this article answers a question I had in Caydon Rel's article. Volcanar wiped out humanity in response to Caydon Rel's ascension, it seems?   I love the description of its usual depiction.

Greetings Realmhopper, Volcanar's response to Caydon Rel's ascension is best described as the violent tantrum of a god. His path of wanton destruction resulted in many of the features in the Strait of Embers, including its burning rain and boiling waters. Though certainly responsible for many deaths, and likely many human ones among them, many of the common folk believe the Obsidian Arbiter cut off the most dangerous portions of the Realm from its densest population centers. The corruption found in the Sea of Souls, the KazaK of Death's Cradle, and the seat of Rel's power kept blissfully away from the countless settled islands in the Sea of Brass.
