Caydon Rel (/KAY:don / rehl/)

The Lord of Magic

Overview

Caydon Rel is a tyrannical Human Exarch of Magic, Progress, Ambition, Knowledge, Law, and Authority. He is considered by most to be a power with few rivals after he remade the world of Marus upon his ascension and became synonymous with magic itself. All aspects of magic in the Realm of Seas obeys his divine authority be it Faith, Glow, or Prime . The tale of his Path to Power is a well known story told across the Realm and serves as a testament to the tenants of the god's faith and his demands on Marus' people.

Stonelicker you must be wary, I have only known one other creature in all the Cosmos with such a drive and ambition for magic. The Tower of Nathal is a cautionary tale for all spellcasters... but especially for those in Rel's dominion. Magic may be a great equalizer, but so too does it turn the ambition into madmen. If only such words could halt his unstoppable engine of progess.
— Elias Dods, A Warning to a Friend

History

Caydon Rel arose from mortality as a true prodigy of his age; as a young man he became a master weaver and a powerful Conduit before reaching his thirtieth year. In the wild subsequent years lost to history, the Lord of Magic is rumored to have traveled to every sea on Marus. He visited every island to be found and dozens of scattered sites can still be found today that mark his passage. He made friends and enemies along the way who aided him along his path to absolute rule. Powerful Divines were his boon and bane, cursed pirates nipped at his heels, and the mysterious kindred of the sky offered their help on more than one occasion. Forged by diligent work and the fires of adversity, a god emerged whom all knew even before he took up the great mantle. The Lord of Magic had been born and it would only mark the beginning of his ambitions.

The history of Caydon Rel is the history of Marus' rising magic and the fall of Humanity on Marus. Before the god's ascension there were few other practitioners of magic in the Realm and its secrets and sources were jealously guarded by those who did. After becoming a Divine, Caydon Rel enacted numerous changes upon the world and that few of its people could do anything to stand against. The three forms of magic were forcefully unified and its use was restricted and carefully governed by the introduction of Marus Veils by the god. Each Sophont had a Veil woven around their Soul and every child born would grow one around their own in time. The Relic Seas were formed and expanded as vast swaths of elementally infused lands cropped up all over the once-pristine waters. Yet the greatest change of his ascension was the disappearance of Humanity from the Realm. Their absence left noticable scars on the land and its peoples, the entire Realm entered a dark age of lost knowledge and forgotten secrets. Much of recorded history was lost with Humanity and someone has taken great pains to erase all that happened before Caydon Rel appeared and ushered Marus out of the dark and into this age of magic. The Gifted were born and every Sophont was given the potential to become anything they could imagine.

Holy Symbol
Represented by a triple helix held within an iron ring. Each strand represents one of the true forms of magic with the ring symbolizing the Relic Arts that bind them together as one.

Tenants of Faith

Those who follow the Lord of Magic are diverse, varied, and innumerable. His lack of direct hands-on guidance has left few unifying principles across their doctrines, but it is undeniable that they all center around ambition and self-improvement.

  1. Improve Yourself.
  2. Trust Not In The Old Magics.
  3. Ascend To The Top.

The only group openly known to worship Caydon Rel directly are those of The Banded Circle. Their ways and teachings are zealously guarded secrets and they remain some of the only Sophonts to have seen the Lord of Magic in person and lived.

Seabound Covenant

Caydon Rel joined this divine covenant only after he was coerced by its two founders; it establishes common laws across the seas, divides territories among the powerful, and assigns duties to the affiliated deities and clergy.

Duties

The Lord of Magic, and his zealous clergy, police the practices of the Gifted and root out Marus' remaining Old Magics practitioners. The Banded Circle travels out in their god's name to eliminate all that they deem as threats to the Realm's order. Their influence is found among:
  • Governors, Mayors, and Chiefs.
  • Archmages, Teachers, and Scholars.
  • Prodigies, Adepts, and Experts.

Description & Depictions

Caydon Rel is always depicted as a roughly middle-aged man of average height and reasonable build. His dark brown hair is cropped short and always with military precision. His clean shaven face is quizzical and filled with a commanding curiosity, making you feel as if compelled to answer any question asked of you. Piercing blue eyes are a common feature seen among his depictions with some artistic rendition replace his eyes entirely with miniature suns. He is normally shown wearing a toga-like wrap or set of leather armor while holding aloft a pair of orbs representing the moons or weilding a gilded trident shaped like a lightning bolt.

Author's Notes

Caydon Rel is an exploration into the question of what would happen when a Sophont in the Cosmos rose to Divinity and became synonymous with all magic on their Realm. How could such a power twist and shape the cosmic laws we have come to know and expect from adventures in Ravarus, Nixus, & Hallus? How would such a Divine warp the Sophonts, ecosystems, and even the other Divine of their Realm?

It's an interesting point that he was a human and yet his ascension meant the end of humanity on Marus. I wonder if that was an intentional thing by him. From the other things said about him, it sounds like it could be. I don't think I would want to meet him, so I think I shall avoid Marus.

Greetings Realmhopper, The rise of Caydon Rel was one of Marus' most pivotal moments. It marked both the end of an age and the disappearance of Humanity in the Realm of Seas. Their Kaelic Sailors of old were the first to chart the seas and the Lord of Magic's rise saw the ruination of their great works. Their southern cities were devoured by ice and are now populated by only the Passarins and those seeking to find back to frigid cold. Meanwhile their great tower to the north, the very seat of their gods, was struck down by Caydon Rel himself and the great god Acropolis brought to the brink of death. It is because of this that the common folk believe him to be the cause of Humanity's disappearance, whether directly or indirectly responsible.
