The Swarm

The teeming masses that compose The Swarm see themselves as pragmatic above all else, unafraid by the simple fact that death is part of the cycle of life. They believe the idea of life and death as opposing forces to be nothing more than naive sentimentality. They know everything crumbles and rots in the end, and then new life springs from that rot. Time inevitably passes, bringing both destruction and new creation to all things.
Much like a swarm of mundane insects, the Golgari often seem to behave more like a single organism than a group of individuals. The guild's leadership is a nucleus or nerve center that drives its direction and growth. some of its members are responsible for collecting nutrients and converting them into usable resources (see Golgari Spore Druid/Shaman/Mage), and others are defenses that resist and fight off foreign bodies (see Golgari Reclaimer). The whole swarm is driven by a primal instinct to survive, reproduce and overcome.
The work of the Golgari Swarm is and always has been to manage the cycle of growth and decay, providing food for the city and processing its wate. They operate at gruesomely hands-on level with the forces of life and death.
