Professions

  Once per three days (3 long rests) a player can perform a check to search for supplies associated with their proficient tool. This is assuming the player is in what the DM considers a "Safe Area" and they are close to a possible successful outcome (I.E you cannot search for plants in a tavern) When a check is requested the user will roll a d20 and add their proficiency with the associated ability modifier.   The DC will vary by location with a natural one on the d20 being an automatic failure and a natural twenty allowing you an automatic success allowing some professions to pick on a table instead of rolling.  
Time to create items
  1 day (24 hrs) per 25 gold of item's value (half that cost for a consumable, such as a potion or scroll). You can work on only one item at a time and will be forced to forfit any progress if you switch to something different.
  After working with your tool for 84 days (2,016 hrs) the player may make a DC20 roll with their tool to gain expertise. On a failure, they can try again on their next successfully crafted item.
