Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Young, fit, and strong, Namen lives in the image of Soliairs' crew and fits among them well. He has several tattoos from his chest to waist of serpents, cranes, and swallows.

Body Features

Namen is a hybrid, having a Mermidae mother and Naga father. He is a rather even mix for the two, which is uncommon, as most like him will typically take after one parent or the other. Due to this, he is quite small compared to most mermidae, but enormous by naga standards, and even if not as long as many naga, still dwarfs most that may be quite older than he is. He is quite muscular and has an incredibly strong tail much more suited to swimming than most naga, making him much faster in the water. Namen also has large fins tipped with sharp, poisonous barbs that can be lethal to most races. His body is covered in scales much more like that of mermidae, leading to him getting dehydrated much easier but not being bound to the water. His body is also covered in the stripes of a lionfish and pattern of a gaboon viper, overlapping in many areas, particularly his shoulders, belly and tail.

Facial Features

From his eyes to cheeks, Namen's face is covered in dark brown, almost black, stripes bordered with orange and white, almost giving him the appearance of always wearing eyeliner. His ears are quite long and dominated by long, spined fins that fade from a translucent white to striking orange, with several piercings.
His hair is naturally a dark brown, but he frequently bleaches it blond.

Physical quirks

Namen is prone to biting his nails, a habit he has been trying to break by chewing on toothpicks and pens instead, often having one in his mouth. This often makes others confuse him for an ex-smoker.

Apparel & Accessories

Most often, Namen forgoes most clothing aside from a dark red sash around his waist and a matching headband. The sash often is used to create convenient pockets by typing and pinning it, and his headband to keep his hair out of his eyes. When in colder regions, Namen typically wears a long black leather coat that extends over his back and much of his tail, to right before his dorsal fin. He is fond of jewelry, having several gold piercings, one on his left ear fin often connected to his headband by a small gold chain.

Personal history

Namen Lugal was born to a Mermidae mother and Naga father. His father, being a member of Hilathu's Cult, quickly absorbed him into the cult and had Namen raised as a member brought up on their ideals and the worship of the Fallen God. In his teens, he began to have doubts about the cult and eventually ran away, managing to make his way to the Shanin Islands where he luckily came across Soliairs Taeyang, the Crane God, in the city for a festival. Namen stowed away on their ship until long after Soliairs set sail and asked for the god's protection. Rather than kick him out or send the boy back, Soliairs stuck with their long standing tradition of allowing all who seek shelter under the crane to stay, under the condition they earn their keep and contribute, hiring Namen to help manage the ship's records.
Being quite skilled in this, Namen very quickly found many flaws in Soliairs' system that was mostly done with pen and paper and that it was incredibly easy to forge records and siphon funds from the temple without notice, as the records were rarely checked. Taking advantage of the situation, he began to steal funds from Soliairs, but no more than his wages working for the god, intending to later confront Soliairs about the issue, but not before he was found out. Benjamen, Soliairs' boyfriend and right hand, caught Namen doing so, and brought the teen before Soliairs himself and due to his mistrust of him, thinking him to be a spy for Hilathu's cult, expected him to come under heavy punishment, perhaps even death.
Rather, Soliairs was greatly impressed by Namen's boldness to steal from a god known for violence and in particular, killing those who wronged them. Quickly he admitted to stealing from the god and only taking the same as he was being paid, most of which he had been spending on courting Soliairs' daughter Gulana, the rest being stored away for his plan to expose the flaws in the records to Soliairs themself. Further impressed, Soliairs then gave the young boy an offer: to become their heir, and upon their death, inherit the position as the new Goddess of Cranes.
Namen accepted this deal, and since, has been training to one day take over as the new crane god. He also forged a strong relationship with Soliairs' daughter, Gulana Taeyang, and the pair are nearly inseparable, remarked by many to deeply care about one another and most who know them expect them to one day get married.

Due to being a member of Hilathu's Cult for all of his childhood and a good portion of his teens, Namen lacks what would be common knowledge of the world in many areas, Despite this, he is quite smart and quick to learn, getting much of what he knows first hand through Soliairs in being trained to one day be a god. Although the cult lacked most formal education, he is quite skilled in mathematics and recordkeeping.

Employment

As Soliairs' Heir, most of Namen's time is spent learning the duties of the gods, and specifically, the crane god. This is a full time job for him in having to learn to manage migration routes, seasonal breeding grounds, the ecology of different crane species, and their environment.
When not being trained for future godly duties, Namen still acts as a record keeper for Soliairs, managing the funds on the Temple of the Crane along with careful records of offerings, supplies, weapons, and food.

Accomplishments & Achievements

Escaping Hilathu's Cult by himself, and as a teenager no less, is nothing short of a feat. Namen managed to not only run away and make his way to Shanai on his own, but did so without most common knowledge of the outside world and with nothing but what he could carry with him. Doing so was incredibly dangerous and at many points he could have been injured, gotten lost, or even killed if he had been found out to be a member of the cult.

History

These two met when Namen was taken in by Soliairs, Gulana's parent, when he was 16 and placed under their protection. Not a true child of Soliairs, Namen had distanced himself from being considered one or being considered fully adopted by the crane, like Rose had been. Like teenagers often do, Gulana and Namen were quick to pursue one another and began to date, if joining one another in raids and battles could be called that.
Although Gulana never wanted to be Soliairs' heir, Namen had been quick to jump on the chance after he proved himself with his tenacity and cunning, with Gulana being supportive of him and frequently cracking jokes that their legacy will be a 'long line of Crane Goddesses'.

Nicknames & Petnames

Gully is a favorite pet name of Namen's for Gulana, while she often calls him Pokey, due to his spines. Gulana also gave Namen the nickname 'Ramen Noodle', which is used by much of the crew to refer to him.

Relationship Reasoning

They were both teenagers, with limited options for each to find romantic partners within Soliairs' fleet, so it seemed natural for both to be drawn together. Their similar personalities and both having a love of fighting only forged their fledgling romance further into a near unbreakable bond- Rarely is one seen without the other nearby these days.
Soliairs often hassles the pair on when they will finally 'get it over with and get married already', as 'everyone knows they will'. Neither has actually decided if or when this will happen, however. Gulana often has made jokes to counter Soliairs' pestering, that they and Ben never did, so there's no reason they need to either. Namen in turn also makes jokes of his own that if they were to actually get married, he'd be expected to invite his birth family, which would be 'terrible, absolutely terrible for fucking everyone'.

History

Namen and Ben did not get off to a grand start to their relationship, with Ben being suspicious of him from the start. Namen's thievery from Soliairs only fueled his dislike for the young man, and was a point of many arguments between the two, with Ben believing him to be a spy for his family's cult. Ben was further spurred by Namen for claiming Soliairs' protection and then immediately jumping into a relationship with Gulana Taeyang, who by all accounts, Ben considers to be his own daughter.
This rivalry has mostly subsided into jest between a father in law and son in law, by all accounts. Benjamen frequently makes jokes at Namen's expense that if he's going to be a part of their family, and more importantly, the next Crane God, he needs to have an heir quickly, and it 'had better be with Gulana'. All in all, Ben simply wants grandchildren and as Gulana is the only one with plans for continuing the family line, he funnels all his harassment into him.

History

JL greatly admires the goddess of cranes. Especially since Soliairs’ goal to broaden the worship of the gods to every person in order to ensure that anybody is just as likely to receive assistance from the divine and restructuring of the system by which the gods are worshiped enables JL’s more clout-chasing side and goal of increasing his renown to the highest possible limit. The goddess of fireflies rarely shies away from a chance to make his presence or divine interventions known to mortals or affairs that others may overlook as trivial or unimportant. Similar to JL and Ryoma, there is also the overlap with Soliairs’ association with sailors and JL’s association with guidance, lighthouses, signals, and morse code. Since JL is also not one to shy away from conflict and believes that conflict is often a natural way for progress to occur and a way for the world to become a better place JL and their cult also have a liking for Soliairs’ connection to rebellion. Peace is all fine and good to JL but people should always be careful about falling into complacency and stagnation.
