Rohesia Mason
Rohesia's family lived in rural Yorkshire in the Middle Ages, in a cottage miles from the nearest village. As ogres, they could be mistaken for humans, but nevertheless significantly stand out among them, so minimised social contact. As a child, Rohesia sometimes sneaked into the nearest village, where she was taken to be a human child significantly older than her actual age. Any adult who talked with her for more than a few moments thus regarded her as "simple".
When she was eight years old, she witnessed a human wedding; the first wedding she had ever come across. She fell in love with the idea of getting married, and started making wishes to find a true love. Shortly afterwards, her parents discovered she had been visiting the village, and strictly forbade her going back.
The area Rohesia's family lived had very little ogre population; the nearest family to them was a week's travel away. Rohesia knew of only one male ogre in her generation that was not related to her, and dreamed up a fantasy of the two of them being married when they grew up. They did not meet until she was fifteen, and the dream abruptly shattered when he started courting her cousin.
Rohesia made the decision that the lack of eligible ogres was not going to stop her from living her dream, and so she visited the village again for the first time since she was eight years old. Now, however, she could no longer blend in with the humans, being taller than most full-grown women, and received completely different reactions from the same people she'd befriended as a child. Their behaviour hurt her deeply, and she was crying in an alley when approached by a huldra named Elspeth, who had recognised her for what she was.
Elspeth told Rohesia that she and her family were in the course of making their way to Zartri Valley, a settlement of Zartriites with very few humans. Rohesia thought it sounded perfect, but when she told her parents about it, they were reluctant to leave the only home they had ever known.
Rohesia went back to the village to bade farewell to Elspeth, but before she could leave, a young man approached her and asked her who she was. Encouraged by his friendly manner, she told him her name and that she lived several miles outside the village. He introduced himself as Jesse, and told her she seemed far more interesting than the young ladies he knew in the village. Flattered by his attention, Rohesia opened up to him about who she was, not heeding her father's warnings about humans' reactions to their kind.
They began courting in secret. She was reluctant to tell her parents she had a human boyfriend, and he claimed to want to protect her from others of his kind. Rohesia expected Jesse to propose to her, but he never did. During one of their secret trysts, she finally told him exactly where her home was, which she had been holding back from sharing before.
The next day, a mob of villagers turned up on their doorstep. Rohesia confessed to her parents as they fled, and their house was burned to the ground. They were given room by their nearest ogre neighbours, and Rohesia wrote a letter to Jesse asking why he had betrayed her secret. Her mother stopped her from sending it, fearing it would lead to them being hunted down again.
When still nurturing her broken heart, Rohesia gave birth to a boy named Erasmus. Although not thrown out, both she and her half-human son were emotionally shunned by their community. Her mother became distant, and though her father understood that she had not meant any harm and tried to support her, he could not understand her decisions themselves and she hated feeling that she had disappointed him.
A few years after Erasmus was born, Rohesia's family moved again, to an area with a larger ogre population. Rohesia saw it as a fresh start and hoped to hide her past, but it didn't go unnoticed that she was an unmarried mother and her son was much smaller than ogre children his age. Although there were plenty of eligible young men, one of whom she had hoped would court her, none were interested.
One day, a dullahan named Quentin arrived in their hamlet, explaining that he had been forced to flee his village after some of them caught him in the act of removing his head. He and Rohesia connected instantly, but while she wanted more, his feelings for her at the time were only platonic. Quentin had grown up among humans, but travelled a lot, and loved a life on the road. He offered Rohesia the chance to come with him. She agreed, after he accepted Erasmus travelling with them.
The three of them set off for Zartri Valley, where Rohesia hoped to find a man who would actually love her. On the way, they had many adventures, and met friends of Quentin both Zartriite and human. Rohesia learned a lot about both herself and the world, and grew in confidence. She courted twice more--first an ogre, then a human--but both relationships were mutually ended, the second a lot more amicably than the first. She got engaged to an ogre named Ulrich, but broke it off with him after realising the relationship was not right for marriage.
Rohesia gave birth to twins, Gerwig and Sigfrid, and settled in a Zartriite hamlet for a few years while Quentin continued travelling without her. When the twins were four--by this time Erasmus was fifteen--she set off for Zartri Valley again with her children. After another broken engagement with a siren, she met up with Quentin again.
This time, Quentin had romantic feelings for Rohesia, but she was hesitant to move their friendship in that direction. She realised she had never quite let go of her own feelings for him, and that it was probably a contributing factor in her previous failed relationships. After discussing it with both him and her almost-adult son, for whom Quentin was the biggest father figure in his life, they decided to give it a go.
Rohesia and Quentin married shortly before they arrived in Zartri Valley, where they had agreed to settle down as Quentin's health was in decline. They made a home there, and after a couple of years had a daughter named Quentine. When she was an infant, Quentin died.
Rohesia and Quentin had had a happy, if short-lived marriage, and she was not interested in getting married again, content with her children and the extended family she had found with her neighbours. Two years after his death, however, Reuben Smith and several other time-travellers--mostly humans--were stranded in the valley. Reuben moved into the house next door to hers.
He had been separated from his fiancée by the destruction of his time machine, and the two became friends quickly. Within a few months they were very close, and after Reuben had had dinner with Rohesia's family one evening, he confessed (with the help of a glass of wine too many) that he was falling in love with her.
Afterwards, the two agreed that it was best not to spend so much time together alone, as Rohesia did not think she wanted to have a relationship with him, or with anyone. As they kept their distance, however, she realised how much she missed him, and that those feelings were not all platonic. It was another year before she felt ready to begin courting, and another four before they married.
Her and Reuben's marriage was very different from her and Quentin's, but no less happy. They had two children together, Dawn and Caspian, and Reuben was happily accepted by his stepchildren. Twelve years after he first arrived in the valley, his and Fayleen's son Hugh showed up, having found out he had the power to time travel and tracked down his father. Hugh was quite startled by his dad's multi-species family, having never heard of Zartriites before, but bonded quickly with his siblings and stepmother.
