2020/10/21: Direfall Dungeon Part 2 Report
General Summary
Ash, Pele, Knight, Lillith, Sith
The party made it to the third of the three required dungeon floors. They promptly found themselves facing a circular room occupied by a constant rotation of wind so strong it would grind metal to nothing in seconds against the walls. The party managed to make a tunnel through to one of the visible side passages with a wall of force, but they found that even those amazingly durable walls could only stand up to the winds for a matter of seconds.
Upon arrival in the short side passage, they found themselves facing an even larger circing hallway, this one patrolled endlessly by a rolling crusher contraption so large it took up the entire width and height of its corridor. And the crusher was more than fast enough to catch a running human. A brief scouting flight by Pele proved the contraption could speed up yet further to catch potential targets by surprise, and it was armed with bola launchers in hopes of immobilizing anything it didn't immediately catch up to on its own. And on the far side of the chunk of solid dungeon the corridor circled around... was yet more flat wall.
The party elected to carry on to the next of the four hallways off the tornado room. This one led to a small room with a large chest sitting in the center. In the hallway, there were remains of past adventurers, but the room itself appeared to have been blasted clean.
After some deliberation and preparation, the party opened the chest, and Ash ended up falling in. He found himself in what appeared to be an endless starscape. And the starscape was watching him back.
He managed to establish communications with this being, this sapient universe, and made a deal. He would carry it out to see the world, and unlike with the previous party of questionable morals, it would do its best not to burn everything around it. And so Ash came out as the glowing-eyed host of the Heart of the Stars.
After establishing that he was still himself, the party agreed to carry on. Resources were beginning to run concerningly low and the only way out of the dungeon was through, so the party returned to the crusher room, which magic consistently pointed to as the exit. Further deliberation and preparation paid off: The party found that the crusher was operated and maintained by a horde of little spirits, granting it effective regeneration and immunity to most interference. They also discovered that there was, in fact, a room inside the center of the hallway circle; it was simply on the other side of a retractable wall well above ground level.
The party set up and set off, slowing the roller enough to keep their slower members safe and let Pele cut a hole through to the center room. The party piled into a machine shop full of more gremlins. A brief running fight ensued, with Pele swiping a tablefull of shop equipment as she passed, but the party quickly made it to the portal and out into the rest and transport zone. And thus were they finally free.
In the end, the dungeon provided almost no treasure, but the party lived. And now it was time to go home and rest.
