Dream Master's Nail

Resembling an oversized longsword made from a single piece of pale metal, this Hallownestian longnail is distinguished by intricate engravings on the blade and a shape resembling a dreamcatcher connecting the blade to the hilt. The dreamcatcher glows with an otherworldly light, and motes of dreamstuff appear and disappear around it.   This weapon is the merged evolution of the Dream Nail and Nightmare Nail. While it has the length of a bastard sword, its weight and handling match those of a longsword or longnail. In additional to its artifact-level accuracy and power, this weapon strikes at its target's mind directly, dealing both physical and psychic damage and granting its wielder brief access to their target's thoughts.   Beyond its great value as a weapon and investigative tool, the Dream Master's Nail grants a variety of useful powers in dream realms, allowing its wielder to cut shortcuts through dreams and manipulate dream worlds in various ways.

While the details haven't been closely investigated, the Dream Master's Nail is most likely made from a single piece of Pale Ore, a rare dream-metal believed to be unique to the dream of Hallownest.

Dream Master's Nail

Weapon Type: Longnail (Longsword)

Description: A long sword of pale metal with a finely engraved blade. The blade and hilt are connected by a shape reminiscent of a dreamcatcher that glows with otherworldly light. Like most Hallownestian nails, this weapon has a pointed pommel and lacks a crossguard, relying on the wide taper of the blade to protect the hand.

Item Properties and Details:
This weapon has the size and reach of a bastard sword, but has the weight of a longsword and uses the longsword proficiency.   This weapon has special effects depending on the type of target struck:
  • Living: The wielder briefly perceives the target's surface thoughts from the time of impact. This is usually a single sentence. If the target is hostile, the wielder also gains 3 Soul. (Soul is used to fuel Hallownestian soul magic. If the wielder does not have a way to store Soul, this has no effect.)
  • Undead: If the target is hostile, the wielder gains 3 soul as above.
  • Dead: The wielder perceives the target's last significant thoughts.
  • Object/location: If the target has sufficient significance or dream presence, the wielder may perceive an echo of the past or a comment about the location.

  • Certain significant targets (usually corpses, sleeping creatures, or inanimate objects) may instead pull the wielder into a dream realm. In most cases, this manifests as an arena battle against an idealized dream form of the target or something related to it, but it can also be a memory of a place or an exploration challenge guarding hidden memories. The wielder may bring creatures in physical contact with them into the dream realm alongside them. Targets that will lead to a dream realm are usually marked in the wielder's sight by floating dream motes, but this is not always the case.   In dream realms, the Dream Master's Nail can be used to draw things that alter “reality”, such as portal doors, and can allow the wielder to teleport at the cost of two attacks (accuracy dependent on attack rolls).   The nail allows a dream path to be cut back to Hallownest, though this may no longer function now that Hallownest has dissipated.   The nail may have additional effects/powers in dreams.   If empowered by the Fishhook of Power, the Dream Master’s Nail looks old, worn, and worthless. The blade's magic functions normally on Shisui.
