Riftborn Flail Snail
A variant of the common flail snail, riftborn flail snails were created by the Rift Dweller that lurked at the bottom of the Chasm of the Lost. With the Rift Dweller's death in 23 ARL, the riftborn flail snails are believed to be extinct.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Like common flail snails, riftborn flail snails look like giant snails with a collection of flail-like appendages where a normal snail's eyestalks would be. They are capable of bludgeoning enemies with these appendages. Otherwise, their anatomy is largely that of a mundane snail. Their maximum ground speed is approximately that of a walking human.
There are three different kinds of riftborn flail snail, all with different special capabilities:
- Red: Empowered by and resistant to magic. Covered in unusually caustic ooze that can damage even magical weapons that strike them.
- Blue: Absorb all magic that strikes them, cancelling the effects. Can consume the magic of magic weapons that strike them.
- Purple: A rare variant, apparently a cross with a displacer beast. Immune to most magic and resistant to physical damage. Has an extra pair of limbs like those on a displacer beast's back, and has a displacement effect like that of a displacer beast, making it difficult to target. Its extra limbs can drain the vitality from those they strike.
Genetics and Reproduction
Riftborn flail snails are believed to be purely a creation of the Rift Dweller and unable to reproduce on their own.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Riftborn flail snails will happily eat any living creature they can catch and kill. It is not clear whether they are interested in eating vegetation, nor whether they need to eat at all.
Behaviour
Riftborn flail snails are very stupid and very aggressive, happily charging after any living creature (translated as "food") that they notice regardless of their own injuries and the target's chances of escape. Despite this, they were only encountered in close proximity to the Cavern of the Lost, suggesting that either the Rift Dweller was guiding them to stay close or those that wandered too far from the Rift Dweller lost stability and dissolved.
