Githyanki and Githzerai

Long slavery to the Illithids - the Mind Flayers tranformed a sapient species and gave them psionic abilities.

After a revolt against the Mind Flayer masters there was a great schism which divided the gith into two ethnicities, Githyanki and the Githzerai.

History

Some scholars have proposed the orginal slaves of the Illithids were evil human wizards, but other evidence, such as the Gith not being mammals, suggests otherwise. All scholars agree during the long enslavement of the race, the Illithids manipulated and experimented upon the Gith. The purpose of this experimentation is unknown, but the results were a race with formidable psionic abilities who rose up to destroy their former masters.
