Acuecueyolotl
Mother of Waters, Heart of Waters
Acuecueyolotl is called Mother of Waters or Heart of Waters. She is the most primordial teotl of the Calmaxtec peoples. She is seen as the great grandmother of all life and is the most commonly worshipped teotl of the seafarers among the Apoxtec and Tzetzal as well as the Chol'ul, where she is known as Ixazaluel. Acuecueyotl has a reputation for sternness and propriety. She is often depicted carrying a switch or lash made out of waves.
With her daughters, the three moons, she is prayed to for protection by communities of sailors and fishermen, as well as those who live on the coasts, regardless of profession.
Offerings to her generally consist of burnt offerings of freshly caught fish, but also fine carvings of bone or driftwood, as well as pearls and amber. Her priests also make offerings of their own blood, dripped from their left arms into basins of blessed sea water.
