Tapu River
The Tapu River is the heart of Kahala'i'i civilization. Its waters began far inland in Tauranga, from the slopes of the holy mountain, Ila Maunga. From there, it gathers waters from the lesser moutains of the interior until it flows, over a mile in width, through the province of Ulau, into Kora Bay.
The waters of the Tapu are blessed to the Kahala'i and all Kahala'i are expected to make a pilgrimage to bathe its waters at least once in their lives, no matter how far away they hail.
Most of the faithful enjoy the waters in western Ulau, where after experiencing the cold, bracing waters of the Tapu, pilgrims can enjoy a warm soak in the nearby hot springs that have made the village of Wahaku famous.
