Port Shurius
Port Shurius (on the moon Myle orbiting the capital world, Thesalys) has gone from sleepy backwater to boom town--despite the The Grey Sword pirates and a small Scro fleet harassing merchant shipping in the sphere. Individuals from across Greatspace have come to Port Shurius to seek their fortune.
Myle is a small Class B celestial body, about 500 miles in diameter. (So, taking about 20 minutes for a ship to land). Port Shurius is on the edge of Lake Shurius, the largest body of water on the planetoid. The lake provides both the fresh water for the town, as well as a landing space for ships that can land on water.
Myle is heavily forested, with a number of wild beasts, and often treated as a hunting preserve by the wealthy nobles of Thesalys. The forests are also an excellent source of lumber for shipbuilding.
All spelljammer vessels from beyond Greatspace larger than 5 tons are required to check in and dock at Port Shurius for customs inspection before going on to their final destination (though this is regularly ignored by ships visiting Hecht, at least while the Greatspace Navy is spread so thin, recovering from the devastation wrought by T'Laan).
Major Features
- The Docks: Merchant ships from across Greatspace and beyond dock here. The docks extend out into Lake Shurius, and provide large landing fields on the outskirts of the town. This enables ships that can land on ground or water to dock here.
- Naval Yards: Port Shurius is also the home base for what remains of the Greatspace Navy (mostly ships that were purchased from the Vodoni). There are a few hammerships and squidships under contruction in the naval yards.
- Drydock: A large flat section used by those ships that can land on earthlike surfaces for full repair. The drydock has complete services, and charges standard rates. (This is where the Skyrunner is being repaired).
- Markets: There are many shops throughout Port Shurius, but one major open market, the High Market. All sorts of items are available here from across Greatspace, with a focus on tools and food suitable for space travel.
- Racial Districts: The population is mostly human, but as the town has quickly grown, a large percentage of nonhuman races are apparent as well, tending to congregate in their own areas.
- Temple District: There are a number of temples near Lake Shurius , devoted primarily to the various good gods of the Greek Pantheon, with Zeus being the most revered. In addition to Polygots and Pantheists, there is a church of Ptah. Smaller nonhuman faiths tend to have small shrines in their racial districts.
- The Graveyard: Most of the dead here are immolated, composted, taken back to their home planet if natives of Greatspace or cast adrift in space, in accordance with the wishes of relatives and faiths. Those that can afford to be interred are laid to rest here.
- Barracks: The barracks house about 200 men, under the command of the Governor.
Major Personages
- Governor Daniel Grane: a long time confidant and mentor of King Bruin, Grane was instrumental in fighting against T'Laan's corrupt rule and restoring House Shambrath. Unfortunately, when Grane was captured by T'Laan, he was turned into a vampire. Grane was ultimately restored to life with the help of the Knights of the Reluctant Circle, supposedly at the hands of Hades himself. Grane was also part of the group that helped the Imperial Elven Navy discover the threat of the Witchlight Marauder in Moragspace, and returned only a couple of months ago from that mission. King Bruin put his trusted, well-traveled friend in charge of Port Shurius, both because he trusted his long-time friend, and to get him away from the court intrigue that he never enjoyed, and has only grown worse since many nobles unfairly blame him for succumbing to T'Laan.
- Keriacus the Sage
- Merquat the Arcane: recently arrived, Merquat has set himself up on the outskirts of the High Market. His reasons for arrival are not clear, but it is seen as a sign that Port Shurius is becoming a "real" spelljamming port. Likely, the Arcane see an opportunity to make profit as Greatspace rebuilds its navy, and other travelers arrive here. Merquat typically travels with several human bodyguards, hired from some of the mercenary guilds on Lagor's World.
- Admiral StarRunner, Ambassador of the Imperial Elven Navy: While nominally a resident of Port Shurius, StarRunner spends most of his time aboard the elven monarch-class Leaf on the Wind, which spends most of its time near Hecht, guarding the large elven populations there and the elven base at Oloth Karak.
- Ambassador Fruk'takk of the Vodoni Empire: Ambassador Fruk'takk of the Vodoni Empire is often in Port Shurius, since it is the official location of the embassy. He is a Vodoni "Breeder", a warrior-magician. There are also some junior "Breeder" officers attached to the embassy. There is also a contingent of Vodoni enforcers: Half-man, half-wolf beast-warriors. For the most part, they keep to themselves in the embassy compound. There is a Vodoni Nightwolf: The light scouting vessel of the Vodoni, appearing as a winged wolf in flight, the Nightwolf is usually painted blue or black, to make it more difficult to spot. The light, maneuverable Nightwolf is intended to flee from all but the weakest of foes, and is equipped with light weaponry which is designed to discourage pursuit. This is Fruk'takk's personal ship, and is in port when he is here. According to popular rumor, there is usually Vodoni Werewolf ship somewhere in Greatspace, aiding the Greatspace Navy with security and pirate tracking. See Vodoni for more details.
