Balor, the Beast of War (Bah-lore)

Amidst the elven tales lies a story about the dangers of contentment and the value of redemption.   "In the early days of the world there once was a proud dragon. Soaring over his woodland territory filled with a multitude of creatures that cowered before him. Then came the adventurers and their conquest. For them, it wasn't enough to merely slay a beast. They desired its power, knowledge, and everything else it had to offer. And so the dragon was spared- captured. The warden of his confinement was an arrogant and mad wizard, obsessed with expanding what he knew of the natural world. So, as ages passed, the wizard went to work vivisecting the dragon, prying away arcane secrets at the ends of cruel instruments. Until one day, the dragon had its chance...   Though the wizard was dead and the dragon's belly full, it remained imprisoned within the bowels of a remote tower. As luck would have it, this tower had long been coveted by a band of duergar marauders. Without the wizard's magic to protect it, these duergar finally captured the fortification only to find a dragon being kept inside.   Balor was its name, and by the time the duergar found him he had been stripped of all his scales. His hide had been scarred beyond all recognition; he hardly looked a dragon. The duergar could have killed him but didn't do so because they saw an opportunity. Though it may have been Balor that planted the seeds of this idea, the duergar offered to rehabilitate him. They forged him a new set of scales and, in return, Balor would march with the Sunless Horde and bring down the walls of their enemies."
