Kobolds

As halflings are to humans, kobolds are to dragonborn: originally fewer in number and replacing innate strength with innate cunning. Kobolds are meticulous creatures; they sport a strong work ethic and are said to have sorcery in their blood. They are a race of many talents and clever tricks. Despite this, they're often discounted as pests or worse by many of the other races. While an outsider might see this perception as a tragic misinterpretation of a proud race, kobolds themselves place value in their underestimation. They work best when in a group and are very scarcely seen adventuring or working alone.   Kobolds have a strong and somewhat complicated relationship with true dragons. The first generations of kobolds were made whenever a dragon gave up a part of themselves to create life. The clan that arises shares the creator's most prominent personality trait but not their alignment. Regardless of the dragon that creates them, kobolds are typically benevolent creatures. But, they will often work in service of their creator due to either reverence or obligation, even if they don't agree with the directions they're given.   When given independence, clans of kobolds often carry out similar tasks to when they were in service of a dragon. Namely, they continue to seek out trinkets and treasures. Before, these would contribute to the horde, but now they use their findings for personal reasons. They're famous treasure hunters and explorers, even surpassing the tabaxi due to their inclination towards magic. The largest difference is that kobolds are largely underground in mines while tabaxi are largely aboveground in forests.   Most modern-day kobolds are independent and spend the majority of their days in perpetual contentment. As long as the clan or group is happy, they are also happy. It also helps that kobold societies are often exceedingly wealthy thanks to their proficiency in mining precious gems.   Kobolds owe their life and their rivalry with gnomes to Kurtulmak.
