Codnou

Another name credited to the unnamed assistant to Sigmund Devereux, Codnou draws its name from his simple statement "It's gettin' cauld noo". By this point in the expedition, Devereux himself was getting rather tired of the cold climate, and put up little objection to the name.   Codnou presents an interesting constitutional situation within Linnadeigh. Most of Linnadeigh's regions are ruled by a provincial council headed by a viceroy - in the northern isles under the additional title of liege laird - appointed by the Overthing in the name of the monarch. However, King Untide II of the ancient tribes is said to have instructed that "As long as this isle remains above the sea, never its crown shall bend the knee to an outsider."   This has led to a situation where the de jure viceroy of Codnou retains the title of king or queen, and is considered by the Linnadean crown to be equal in rank. The crown of Linnadeigh remains "first among equals", though its commands - and indeed the rule of the Overthing - are in Codnou nominally issued by its own crown as "in sovereign accord". As a result, the Codnovian legal canon extends to the very earliest years of the Linnadean nation - and to centuries of local legislation before it.   Codnou's strong historical focus on laws, with centuries of civilisation prior to its rediscovery by the Devereux expedition, has led not only to the famed legal academy of Orcneigh, but also its motto - "E legibus natio nostra".
