Kingdom of Masoria

Off in the corner of the World, the old and hard-headed Kingdom of Masoria is built of bricks and long grudges. Nestled where the Silent Sea meets the outer reaches of the Inner Seas, the only neighbors the Kingdom has are the two desert regions, Dorun and Pirenni. The people here eke out a quiet life and generally feel distrust for those from other parts of the World.

Life Isolated

Masoria may not truthfully be the farthest region from the Heart, but it feels like it when you're there. High atop the craggy peaks, where the warm desert winds whip into chill, staring down at basalt coastlines hundreds of feet below you, you couldn't feel farther from anywhere more comfortable. The only land routes in and out of Masoria climb rapidly in altitude from Dorun, making switchback turns on old roads until the rare desert snows never seem to fully melt. Getting out via the sea isn't much easier - shipyards and docks are often quite a hike down from the cliffs that cities are built upon. Some only a few hundred feet, others the better part of a mile.   This feeling of isolation and removal from the rest of the World has made its way into the culture of Masoria and the mindsets of the people. They tend not to care much for the affairs of other regions, even when war or revolution breaks out only a few regions away. Their focus is inward, on their communities and providing for them, and they tend not to allocate many resources to strangers. Those used to a warm welcome in a place like the Pridelands will find Masorians downright cold in comparison.

Edge of Danger

The Silent Sea isn't to be trifled with, and the Masorians who depend on it know that more than anyone. Where the ground is too cold and dry to grow crops, the people turn to the sea to make their livings. Those who live on the silent side prepare for each journey to sea like they're arming for battle. Where the seafloor drops and magic dilutes, the waters grow cold and dark, and the fish and other creatures of the deep that live in these waters become larger and more competitive in their ecosystem. Catching one or two good fish might feed your family for a week, but you're just as likely to have your boat battered by fins or tails. Every village along the silent coast can tell you how many good young folk they've lost at sea, or seen snatched from their boats by something lurking below. The grave atmosphere of these villages only makes sense.
