The Chains
Believed to be the entrails of The Bright King hardened into metal, the Chains secure the Spheres to their locations in the sea. At the bottom of each bathysphere are large, metal chains.; most spheres only have one chain but for the larger ones there may be up to five. The links of these chains are an average of 240 feet in diameter and are attached to the bottom of the bathyspheres through massive welds, sutures and bindings. The bottom of the chains disappear into the ocean floor, rapidly covered up by the dirt.
The chains themselves are highly magical and sturdy, and old chains from the ruined bathyspheres of the Minefield are harvested by some salvagers and scavengers. However, most people view objects made from the Chains as sacrilegious or an omen of bad luck and while the items made from the chains are useful they are rarely used by anyone but the people of Rust.
Destroying a chain is considered the highest form of war crime in Ripple, a decree put down at the end of the Welding Wars when the bathysphere of Promise had its chain detached sending the sphere and its inhabitants into The Upper Layer.
