Mystra
Mystra, the Mother of all Magic, is a greater deity and is the third incarnation of the goddess of magic after her predecessor Mystryl sacrificed herself to protect the Weave from Karsus's Folly.
Mystra's first incarnation was destroyed by Helm when she defied the will of Ao the overgod and attempted to leave the Prime Material Plane during the Time of Troubles. Magic had lost it's stability with her in her diminished form and only by returning to godhood could she spare the lives of all who suffered.
At the conclusion of the Godswar, Ao offered the position of Goddess of Magic to the wizard Midnight, who reluctantly accepted and took Mystra's name in order to smooth the transition after so much chaos.

Circumstances of Birth
Born in the beginning of time from the fighting between Selune and Shar, when Selune tore part of herself and blasted Shar with it. The two energies mixed to create a new god Mystral who had dominion over the weave.
