Session 4
General Summary
The party stood at the edge of the city of the kuo-toans having discovered that the key to binding
the Scarlet Lord were ancient religious tablets located at the bottom of the Temple of the kuo-toan
goddess, the Sea Mother. They decided to retreat back to the surface, report their progress and rest
up before tacking the temple. Flek remained behind this time whilst the other four made their way
deep underground once more.
The island on which the temple stood was mysteriously free from the Scarlet Tide and the heroes
approached the pentagonal structure carefully, entering through one of the five pairs of entrance
doors. The interior was a large dome full of water, with a raised platform in the middle. Statues of
the Sea Mother were placed equal distances around the platform. As the group climbed into the
water to cross to the central platform, bolts of lightning fired from the statues' claws into the
water, electrocuting those in the water. At this stage the ghosts of four kuo-toan priests
materialized and attacked the adventurers. They flung them into the water telekinetically and then
lightning bolted the water themselves! It was a hard fight but eventually Lady Fortuna called on
the power of Pelor and drove two of them off and they others managed to finish the last two off.
In the centre of the platform was a strange column of water, supported by some strange
transparent force field. A copper staircase ran up the outside of the column, circling up through a
hole in the roof. The heroes ascended the staircase and emerged in a new level. They explored this
level carefully, fighting a few more ghosts and a 9' tall statue of the Sea Mother that animated.
They made their way up through three levels until they reached the top. Here they came across a
room with a large deep pool and a strange creature in it. The creature was about 15' in diameter
and covered with mouths and eyes. It was gibbering madly and the noise seemed to affect and
confuse Traubon such that he stuck his sword in the back of the barbarian! Fortunately Tor's
reactions were superhuman and he twisted out of the way in time to avoid getting badly cut. He
proceeded to wallop some sense into the Dwarf with the flat of his great sword! The group left the
room, regrouped and tried again.
This time Tor jumped onto the creature and started slashing it with his greatsword. Kai helped out,
pummelling it with his fists. Lots of little mouths came out of the creature, biting and grabbing our
heroes and sucking their blood. Suddenly a huge number of mouths grabbed and bit Tor and he
fell to the ground. Quick thinking from Lady Fortuna summoned him away using her magical
bracelet and she tried to heal him but found he was already dead.
Kai heard this, leapt onto the creature's back and pummelled it until it moved no more. Beyond the
creature was a cabinet with some fish scale robes that the writings in the palace said were to be
used to survive the great pressures of the underwater chambers under the crypts. The party
collected them and then carried Tor's body back to the surface.
Cardinal O'Connor, head of the church of Pelor, called upon the mercy of the god of the Sun and
summoned Tor's recently departed spirit back to his body. He was weakened by the experience,
but was alive once more!
The party, four strong still, rested a few days, allowing Tor to recover from his ordeal. They then
decided that they must return to the depths of the earth and find the Tablets of Sifkhu. They
penetrated the temple, and made their way back to the top floor where the top of the mysterious
pillar of water could be found. They donned their new robes, finding them made them move and
fight easily underwater. They entered the pool and swam down the tube of water, emerging below
the temple in an area they soon discovered to be the crypts. The place was entirely flooded but
with these robes they had no problems moving about underwater. The explored the mazy passages
of the crypts encountering many animated undead - skeletons and zombies mostly. These were no
match for such hardened heroes and were easily dispatched. Until they entered one chamber and
found a ghostly priest animating a recently dead kuo-toa. Lady Fortuna raised her holy symbol and
the undead turned and fled. They continued to explore the crypt, finding a way down to lower
levels, but they prudently ignored it for the moment. Eventually they located the lair of the ghost
who they had caused to flee earlier and they engaged it and destroyed it fairly easily. In it's lair
they found a big stash of opals worth a small fortune.
Deciding to rest up and recover fully before braving the deeper depths the group left the temple
and returned to the land of the living about ground...
