Avaini Crime Family
The Avaini crime family is a powerful syndicate operating within Tatharia Capitolina. Initially known as the Mongoro crime family, it underwent a transformation when Tavos Avaini took control following the death of its previous leader, Peder Mongoro. Under Tavos, the organization focused on survival and consolidating its existing operations. Since then, under the leadership of Tavos' son, Velthur Avaini, the family has sought to expand its power and influence while remaining just beneath the radar of the authorities. Though technically subordinate to the more powerful Brüd Crime Family, the Avaini family has ambitions of carving out a larger share of control within the underworld.
Structure
The Avaini crime family is structured with Velthur Avaini at the top as its head. Directly beneath Velthur are his trusted underbosses, individuals responsible for various aspects of the family's operations. Chief among them is Ermun Sappali, Velthur's favorite enforcer, who serves as an underboss and ensures that Velthur's orders are executed swiftly and without question. Other underbosses manage the various branches of the family business, from smuggling operations to protection rackets.
Beneath the underbosses are the lieutenants, who each oversee a group of associates and foot soldiers. These lieutenants are responsible for day-to-day operations, ensuring that payments are collected, shipments are moved, and territory is protected. The associates, or "made members," are fully inducted members of the Avaini crime family, loyal to Velthur and granted a share of the family's profits. The lowest tier includes hired muscle and those seeking to prove themselves to the family, often doing the most dangerous jobs with hopes of being inducted as associates.
Public Agenda
Officially, the Avaini crime family denies its existence. Members of the family who are questioned by authorities or members of the public maintain that they are involved in legitimate enterprises, from trade and investments to offering "security services." However, the Avaini name is notorious in Tatharia Capitolina, and many members of the family have served prison sentences for various crimes. Despite these convictions, nothing has ever been traced directly back to Velthur Avaini, who remains publicly untarnished and maintains a façade of legitimacy.
The family maintains influence over several businesses in the city, which they use to launder money and exert economic control. Through their connections, they provide loans, security, and even employment opportunities, thereby creating a network of obligation and loyalty among the city's merchants and residents. Their public agenda is to be seen as protectors of their community, offering help where the official channels of authority fall short.
History
The Avaini crime family was originally known as the Mongoro crime family, named after its founder, Peder Mongoro. Peder established the organization as a small but efficient syndicate focusing on smuggling and extortion. After Peder Mongoro's death, leadership of the family passed to Tavos Avaini, one of Peder's most trusted lieutenants. Tavos sought to ensure the family's survival by avoiding unnecessary conflicts and staying on the good side of more powerful organizations, particularly the Brüd Crime Family.
When Tavos passed away, his son Velthur Avaini took over, and the family's direction changed. Unlike his father, Velthur was not content with merely surviving under the Brüd family's shadow. He began expanding the family's influence, forging alliances with other minor factions and diversifying their operations. He also moved the family into more high-profile activities, including involvement in auctions and acquiring rare artifacts. Under Velthur's leadership, the Avaini family has become more ambitious, working quietly but persistently to carve out a greater place within Tatharia Capitolina's underworld, even if it means challenging the balance of power.
