Chalcedonia is defined by the imposing expanse of the Onyx Mountains, which dominate the province both geographically and culturally. The political seat of Chalcedonia is the cavern fortress of Myrrhaunder, a subterranean city built into the heart of the mountains. Myrrhaunder guards a vast network of mines that yield rare gems for the empire, and is reputed to be built upon ancient Dwarven ruins—a claim that adds an air of mystique, as Dwarves are believed to be extinct. The name 'Myrrhaunder' derives from an old phrase meaning 'echo of Myrrha,' referring to a forgotten Dwarven queen whose legend speaks of riches hidden deep beneath the mountains. Unlike its neighboring provinces, Chalcedonia's rugged terrain fosters isolated communities rather than large settlements. The Onyx Mountains are a formidable natural barrier, but they are also a treasure trove of precious minerals and gemstones, including the sought-after chalcedony stone, after which the province takes its name. The province remains largely untamed, its rugged landscape posing challenges for governance but offering significant rewards for those bold enough to traverse its steep paths, but the underground infrastructure, supported by the advent of the ACS, has made the subterranean areas peaceful and safe.
