Light of Mercy

The Light of Mercy is a recent subfaction within the Order of the Golden Blade, established approximately 25 years ago. Emerging from within the ranks of the Order itself, this group represents a significant deviation from the rigid, unyielding mission of the parent organization. The Light of Mercy advocates for a more nuanced approach to the undead, proposing that not all undead are beyond salvation and that redemption may be possible for some. This view, which runs counter to the traditional beliefs of the Order of the Golden Blade, has positioned the Light of Mercy as both a beacon of hope for those seeking a different path and a source of controversy within the Order.

Structure

The Light of Mercy operates secretly within the Order of the Golden Blade, blending into the rank and file without formal recognition. They do not have an official leadership or distinct hierarchy but instead function as a loosely connected network of sympathizers. They tell the story of Blade of the Dawn Bruthor Anselm, who argued for the life of Allym Moram and was subsequently exiled, as an inspiration for their beliefs. The Light of Mercy does not openly identify themselves or wear any symbol, but their members quietly seek to influence the Order’s actions by advocating for redemption and compassion within their ranks.

Mythology & Lore

The Light of Mercy was founded by Blade of the Dawn Bruthor Anselm, a respected member of the Order of the Golden Blade who began to question the absolutist stance on the eradication of undead after a transformative experience during a mission. Anselm, along with a small group of like-minded members, encountered a sentient undead being—a once-heroic Paladin, who, despite his undead state, continued to protect innocents and uphold his former oaths. This encounter shattered Anselm’s understanding of undeath, leading him to believe that some undead may still possess their humanity or even serve a higher purpose.   The Light of Mercy began as a secretive group, meeting in secluded areas of the Order's fortified monasteries to discuss an alternate interpretation of Eolande's divine mission. Over Time, as more members resonated with Anselm's ideas, the subfaction gained enough strength and support to formally declare themselves as a part of the Order—albeit one with distinct theological interpretations.

Divine Origins

The Light of Mercy began as a group of sympathizers within the Order who quietly supported Anselm's alternate interpretation of Eolande's divine mission. The movement took root when Blade of the Dawn Bruthor Anselm argued for the life of Allym Moram, a Tiefling woman accused of marrying Cusith Moram, a local lord believed to be a vampire. Anselm was moved by Allym's desperate pleas for mercy and argued against her execution, stating that her actions did not make her an accomplice to evil. This act of compassion led to Anselm's expulsion from the Order of the Golden Blade, and he now lives in exile. Despite this, the Light of Mercy continued to grow, remaining secretive in nature, with members operating within the rank and file of the Order while quietly spreading Anselm’s story. They wear no badge and have no formal leadership, but they are united by their belief in the possibility of redemption.

Political Influence & Intrigue

The emergence of the Light of Mercy has caused significant friction within the Order of the Golden Blade. The mainstream Order views their beliefs as dangerously naive, even heretical. Though the Light of Mercy operates covertly within the ranks, their differing philosophy has led to suspicion and mistrust from more orthodox members. Their sympathizers often face subtle forms of ostracism and are frequently assigned the least desirable missions, as a way to undermine their influence and discourage their views from spreading.   The Pantheobule of the Tatharian Empire, ever eager to manage internal conflicts within the faith, has taken a cautious interest in the Light of Mercy. While the mainstream Order rejects the subfaction’s views, the Pantheobule sees value in the message of compassion, particularly as a counterbalance to the often brutal reputation of the Order of the Golden Blade. The Pantheobule has made discreet overtures to sympathizers within the Light of Mercy, recognizing that their covert influence could serve to foster broader acceptance of Eolande's faith. The fact that Light of Mercy operates without formal leadership or symbols makes them difficult to root out, and their clandestine nature allows them to continue quietly advancing their beliefs.   This interest from the Pantheobule, however, has only deepened the divide between the Light of Mercy and the more orthodox members of the Order. Many see the Pantheobule's involvement as meddling in their sacred mission, and tensions have flared during several formal gatherings, resulting in heated arguments and even duels.
