Agathel (Ag-ah-fell)

The city of Agathel is bordered by the ancient Elnurian Forest to the south, the Silverblood River to the east, and the Senubie River to the north. The city thrives as a gateway for the goods flowing through the region, and its strategic location has made it a prosperous trade hub. To the east, beyond the wide Silverblood River, lies the city of Pietra, a less prosperous sister city to Agathel. The city, despite its size, carries an air of quietness, as if the sounds of life itself are hushed within its walls. Even the clanging of hammers from the craftsmen's workshops is strangely muted.   Agathel is a fortified city, its walls and defences are strongest north and east. The walls gradually taper in strength as they merge with the Elnurian Forest.. Agathel's architecture reflects its unique character, with buildings which merge styles found in the Elnurian Forest and those with Valantia, leading to structures with grand and ornate details, large arches, and the integration of greenery into the city.   The population of Agathel is predominantly Human, much like the other Free States. However, the elder races make up a significant minority, comprising about forty percent of the city's inhabitants. Elves, dwarves, and gnomes contribute to the diverse tapestry of Agathel's population.   Agathel has as good inter-race relations as can be expected anywhere in Runedastil, meaning pogroms occur infrequently and public discrimination is not too common. There are also few if any legal discrimination within Agathel’s laws. This is the result of the close contact with the Elnurian peoples and the collaboration with the peoples of Aran’Nack.

History

Agathel has been overshadowed by its former colony Valantia, which gained independence from Agathel. The Republic of Valantia has subsequently become a naval and mercantile powerhouse, stronger and richer than Agathel.   Agathel has long faced threats, from raiders, slavers, and pirates, primarily originating from the Yhessie Kingdoms. Over the years, Agathel has engaged in wars and paid tributes in gold and people to placate these aggressors. The conflicts have bred deep animosity towards the Yhessie peoples, resulting in violence and tensions between the two groups. In 533:Conquest as a reaction to what are called the Wars of Betrayal, or the Radiant Crusade depending upon who and where one asks, Agathel renounced its status as an independent kingdom and became a part of the Northern Defensive Union.
