Duergar

The duergar are set apart from the other dwarven races by massive cultural and religious practices and geographic location, as the majority of duergar are found deep beneath the surface of Runetalras in the Underdark, or have recently migrated to the surface world or its upper crusts.
The duergar were once like any other dwarves living in a great subterranean kingdom as part of the Orzar’Nack, the Darkquake changed everything. The whole subterranean cities were swallowed up and thought destroyed and lost by the rest of the chaotic Orzar’Nack Empire. Not all the dwarves and gnomes in these cities died, although soon the living learnt to envy the dead; these dwarves were captured and enslaved by the illithid who performed vile experiments and twisted the dwarves into the duergar.
The duergar believed that they were the last of the dwarves, and that no others survived the Darkquake, as they knew their kin could not have abandoned them to their horrific fate. After the IllithidWars when the duergar broke away from their slavery they descovered that other dwarves survived the Darkquake, and futher descoved that the dwarves knew the fate that befel the duergar and refused to help for fear of the drawing the ire of the illithid. The duergar were filled with anger, rage, and disappointment in their kin who had betrayed them and broken countless oaths; this feeling of betrayal is still strong in the duergar today who have sworn vengeance upon their kin.

Physical Description

The duergar are much like any other Dwarf, except for their skin which appears far palier and almost white or grey.

Abilities

While any other Dwarf has a kind of dark vision that may well suit them, duergar instead have exceptional eyesight which has adapted from their millennia living in the Underdark. Also as a result of the experimentation of the illithid, the duergar have greater resistance to magics and the ability to make themselves larger and invisible.

Homelands

The vast majority of the duergar live within the Underdark petty kingdoms, like the Kingdom of Barakmycos, which war with one another and the Drow, deep gnomes, and illithid. Since the Wars of Undeath many more duergar have begun to make their homes within the subterranean lands of the dwarves and the surface of Runetalras, although they have not received warm welcomes, given millennia of violence and slaving.
