shadar-kai (Shar-dar-ky)

The shadar-kai have an almost mythic status, as creatures used to scare naughty children at night, described as shadowed, pale humanoids that appear like elves and have a malevolent nature. Ancient myths passed down claim that the shadar-kai were banished to the Shadowfell for egregious crimes.   Scant information on these creatures is known to be true, they appear to be related in some way to the elves of Runetalras and Feywild, they also seem to make their home within the Shadowfell, and finally some are capable of reaching Runetalras.   Few can say they have met a shadar-kai, as they seem to be secretive and also few in numbers, fewer can say they have had a conflict free exchange with a shadar-kai; this is because shadar-kai encounter on Runetalras seem high motivated to achieve specific goals and are known to do anything to reach their ends.

Information Not Commonly Known

The shadar-kai are not native to the Shadowfell instead they are the descendants from elves who migrated there from the Feywild; this is much the way that the elves present in Runetalras made their way from the Feywild and spilt to the many diverse groups we see today. The shadar-kai have been altered by the nature of the Shadowfell to become the, admittedly fearsome, creatures they are today. The shadar-kai appear almost corpse pale with dark eyes, they also have a natural affinity for necrotic energies.   The shadar-kai have suffered within the hostile and resource sparse Shadowfell, but they have survived and their culture and people endured. The shadar-kai population are focused around the Fortress of Memories, a large castle dedicated to the deity the Raven Queen. The Raven Queen and worship to her are invariably tied to the shadar-kai, their culture, and their religion. The Raven Queen offered shelter to the shadar-kai using what influence and power she had.   The shadar-kai are known to be brutal and effective in their effort on the Prime Material Plane as they enact what they believe is their matreon’s will. These agents do not reflect all of shadar-kai society as only the most driven, committed, and powerful individuals travel amongst the plane and serve the Queen’s will. Those who encounter the shadar-kai in their home plane can find them guarded to outsiders but no more hostile than members of any other race.
