Lapti

Lapti are shoes woven from the bark of a linden tree. They are worn by particularly poor peasants and normally fall apart within a few months.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

Even although lapti wear out quite quickly, it is considered bad luck to throw them away. Wornout lapti can be hung from the fence or in the barn to ward off evil forces, or burned in the stove for kindling.

Manufacturing process

Lapti are considered very easy to weave, although the bark must be collected without harming the tree. This spawned the proverb "the bark does not knit" when describing a drunk person, meaning that they are so innebriated they cannot even perform a simple lapti weave.

Significance

It is believed that is a person dreams of lapti, they are destined for a long and interesting journey. More specifically, if they dream of themselves weaving lapti, this means they are respected by their friends. On the other hand, if they dream of themselves buying lapti, this spells misfortune.
Proverb
To "ring the lapti" means to "wander idly to and fro".
