Conspiracy theories around the Wildfires of '06

Does God have the key of this black sky?
— Chelu Nieddu-Tazenda
The terrible summer of 2006 will be one that will stay in the memory of the people of Onfalu for a long time. The nature seemed to conspire against the small nation, but it's clear that humans gave an helping hand to achieve such a level of destruction.   The sudden trigger of so many sparks in such a little time made everybody think about a central mind behind it.   Here follow the more accredited hypothesis:

It was the Janas/the istrias

Among the first to be blamed for it, there's been of course the Janas and the other magical creatures.   Never mind that the wildfires caused even more damage to their homes and lifestyle than to everyone else's, there's always going to be a number of people in Onfalu that thinks that the creatures and their human allies are out to get them and are a challenge to the human ways of life with their only existance.   At least one of the 46 condemned for the initiation of the fires was a known Istria found performing a rain ritual in the woods when the first sparks started to fly. Investigations subsequent to her hastly sentence showed that among the remains of the ritual there were no flammable parts or potential fuels. This didn't stop the conspirationists to attach her name as the mastermind of the disaster.

It was the Neo Romans

On the other hand there are the sympatizers of the Janas and their similars, that think the NeoRomans set the island on fire only to destroy the hated creatures.   Though some of the members of the organization have been witnessed throwing impromptu parties when the news of janas found dead in their domus arrived, it is true that many of them had to throw the party on the streets because they were left without a home themselves.   It seems that if they were the mind behind the catastrophe, they miscalculated heavily the direction of the wind and what lied between the fire and the domus.

It was Turri/It was Casteddu

Onfalu might have been united for centuries now, but there's still someone that thinks that the most likely culprit of every evil is their neighbours.   The Turri and Casteddu rivalry is an ancient one and symptomatic of the worst defect of S'ards: envy. In this instance the ire of these people focused on thinking that the the other Juigadu set fire to the whole island just to procure damage to the others.   Both banners are accusing the others with the same amount of force and already some acts of "revenge" have been recorded by the hands of the more fanatic of each part.

It was the Continentals

This is the name S'ard in ancient times reserved to Romans, but now came to encompass any non S'ard with colonizing intents.   It is unclear who the Continentals are in this instance, but the conspirationists claim that some foreigner power was trying to destroy Onfalu's island to be able to starve its government and convince it to sell large pieces of land at a small price for industrial purposes.   Out of all the conspiracy this is one of the less far fetched, as the tactic has been used before, but it lacks any proof and the identity of this misterious Foreign power is very vague.

Alene Lodde

Alene was an istria of the Coven of Funtana Bona. During the night between the 12th and 13th of August 2006, noticed the fires spreading quickly in the forest of Montes, she left her home with an handful of ritual implements and reached the Fount to attempt a rain ritual. Shortly after, she was reached by some villagers hoping to get a little water from the almost dry spring to help in the attempt to estinguish the flames. Found the woman surrounded by her magic tools, they were quick to blame her for the fire that was burning down their fields and but recovered the full content of the bag she left by the fount: a ceramic bowl, a bronze figurine of the Mother and a small horn knife.

If one thing is a constant throughout all of history, it's the blaming of the other when things go wrong. Of course the Janas and Istrias were the first ones to be blamed for the incident. That poor Istria who was just trying to make it rain. :(   And of course, all the other groups that could be blamed for it are also blamed in some capacity.   I think the headers would work better if they said 'it was' instead of 'it's been', just a small grammar note. :)   Very interesting. I wonder what the truth is.

I love how you've structured this article with the repeating headings - gives a real sense of the blame game, but also a rhythm/pace when reading it. I do really enjoy not just what you write, but also how you write it.

The accusatory attitude of this article is very reminiscent of human behavior, always looking for someone else to blame. The little side story of the woman who was blamed and killed because of it is a nice touch, really drawing attention to the horrible reality and the sense of fear in the people.

You should check out the The 5 Shudake, if you want of course.
