The Traigolzu

Not all magical creatures feel bound to the treaties of the Carta de Liga, some don't have the intellectual capacity to do so, others simply don't care.

In the middle of the two categories lies the Traigolzu.

The Traigolzu is an abyssal monster, reminiscent of a giant octopus, that inhabits the seas around Onfalu's coast. This colossal creature spends the majority of the year in the depth of marine caverns, eating fish and crustacean as any well behaved cephalopod would. During its mating season, though, it starts to develop a craving for human flesh and gets closer and closer to the surface, at first snatching stranded fishermen and scuba divers, then starting to gain the land crawling out of the water and through seaside villages on its ten tentacles.

Despite its alien aspect, this creature has a keen mind, though no sense of law or loyalty, and will use every rouse to coerce people out of their shelters and drag them into the sea with them. When every other tactic fails, it resolves to use the magic properties of its siphon, capable of emitting a sweetly scented gas that has hypnotic powers. This is used as a last resource as it's fundamental for the creature breeding process and it will cause an increment of the human meat needs to replenish it. This is a most unwelcome development of the situation, as the monster will go on a feeding frenzy to satisfy its hunger and will potentially use more of the gas in a chain reaction.
Legends are told about Traigolzus rampaging villages for days in one of these episodes until finally subdued by joint forces of witches and Janas as it started to threaten its own fairy siblings. Fortunately, these episodes are rare and only three active Traigolzus are currently known in Onfalu's sea.   They rarely gain land anymore, satisfied by the occasional unfortunate sailor or diver they can capture in their large territories.

Lazily, the creature stirs and stretches her tentacles moving aside the stones that block most of her exit, studying the blue expanse outside her den. The dim light that filters through seems almost blinding after her long slumber.   She blinks twice before starting to crawl out of her stony home.

Awesome kraken time :D   How large are these things? And is their gas effective under water, or just above it?   I love the blue picture too - just looks so alien :D Great work Tina

The size is about elephant-ish, I didn't think about the gas, since it's used for mating purposes, I suppose there are two possible answers: 1)It works in water too or 2) they gather somewhere in the surface to breed. I will consider the implication for both, but potential tells me that probably the second is a better choice :)

Yikes! Eaten by a giant octopus is low on the list of ways I want to die.

I'm sorry Emy! It's not its fault, it's just trying to make baby octopi and there are only two others giant octopi left...

Now I kind of want to write the story of the poor last of the species that arrives at the mating island and finds no one... Like Dragonheart, but with tentacles...

I love the idea - it's easy to imagine the image as it clambers onto land and the emotion of those that see it coming! Great stuff :)

Time to reveal the background on this one. The mythological creature it's inspired by it's a sort of minotaur that gets out of the water to drawn people. The characteristic of this creature is that it drags some chains making an horrible sound. I liked the idea of a marine creature crawling in the land to hunt for people, but the minotaur sounded wrong. But when tentacles were mentioned my mind went chains=tentacles and there it was :P

Awesome :0 Is the reason why they crave human meat before mating known?

In world there have been little chances of studying it, for obvious reasons. There are theories, and it might be one of the hooks of future plots. I have a partial answer but I'm not sure yet if I want to detail it and make it all sciencey or just *wave hands* magic and conspiracy theories. It is a setting with both magic/fantasy elements and high technology so it can go either way :)

I was thinking this sounds incredibly similar to an octopus just more hungry. Then I read the portion about them in their feeding frenzies and realized not as similar as I thought. I really think they are supper interesting though.

You should check out the The 5 Shudake, if you want of course.
