Dragons
Magical, demonic blooded beings from another plane.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Dragons are large, inherently magical, pseudo-reptilian creatures. Most have wings, claws, and sharp teeth.
Biological Traits
Dragons are protandrous sequential hermaphrodites, beginning life with functional fertilization organs, and ending it with the ability to create eggs. Around halfway through a dragon's life, they will begin to feel an urge to nest, mated or no, and will enter into a state of hibernation where this change occurs and the first egg is laid. There is no particular urge to procreate at this time without a previous desire or mate, and most dragons will exit this stage and go on with life uninterrupted.
Genetics and Reproduction
Dragons are hatched from eggs.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Most dragons are carnivores, though those blended with human society have grown into omnivores.
Biological Cycle
Most dragons hibernate for up to two months every year.
Additional Information
Social Structure
Dragons have a clan-based social structure, with large, blended families, usually built from a central leader figure. A strong dragon with plentiful territory and resources may attract more incoming clan members, and clans often fracture from infighting after growing too large.
Hatchlings and drakes are cared for by many members of the clan.
Geographic Origin and Distribution
Errevar is home to the largest dragon population in Sacros.
Average Intelligence
Smart, with inborn magical aptitude.
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Like many predators, dragons have exceptional senses. Increased sight and night vision, sharp hearing, and a strong sense of smell and taste are common, though specifics depend on the subrace.
Civilization and Culture
Naming Traditions
Draconic names are very chunky sounding, and hard to impossible for humans to pronounce. For use in Sacrosian society, dragons often pick their own Common names, often fun-sounding nouns or their jobs.
Gender Ideals
Completely non-human gender roles. Presentation is fickle and matters very little in humanoid forms.
Courtship Ideals
Dragons are impressed by displays of size and bounty, and lavish gifts and mating dances are common factors.
Common Taboos
While still publicly taboo, dragons are rare to truly worship the Väktivar and the most common to form cults to the Allmother.
History
Millennia ago, dragons tried to invade Sacros, leading to the creation of the first heillige to combat the onslaught. Some clans surrendered during the war, exchanging info on their combat patterns for permission to stay on this plane. The invasion was beat back, and these select clans stayed on this plane, agreeing to help rebuild what their brethren destroyed.
Over time, varying types of dragon made their way to this plane, which led to the current varied population.
