Aldwolf
The Aldwolf is a huge relation to the wolf, which favours high and cold environments. The name derives from the popular supposition that they originate from, are bred by, and were unleashed on the world by, the Alder. In fact, while the seem to have migrated from traditional Alder lands, they pose almost as much a threat to the Alder themselves, so certain isolated tribes are recorded as having tamed, and even ridden the wolves.
For the rest of Sammerden, they are a monstrous beast - dwelling only in the higher caves and tall mountains, hunted only be the brave and eccentric. Though most often avoided, the pelt of a slain Aldwolf makes an impressive - and effective - winter coat, or prestigious display piece. Similarly, their four canine teeth are large enough to function as pennants and worn charms among the Elosi and Tetra.
Basic Information
Ecology and Habitats
Aldwolves require thin air, and cold temperatures for their habitats - preferring to dwell around the upper levels of mountains and on the Alderi tundra. Within their habitat, they will frequently build or acquire a den (often a cave in mountainous areas) where much of their time will be spent, and where pups can be raised. From this den, Aldwolves will launch hunts for local fauna - mountain goats, deer, elk, or Tetran & Elosi wanderers!
Biological Cycle
Aldwolves have a short hibernation cycle each year, around the two warmest months. In advance, as spring is ongoing, the aldwolves make use of the sudden burst of animals emerging from winter to over-feed on young deer and goats before themselves settling in the den during high summer. Their re-emergence as summer is waning gives them sufficient time to re-feed on grazing animals before they begin the stalking and hunting of the autumn and winter.

Geographic Origin and Distribution
Aldwolves prefer the extreme cold, and the thinness of high air - finding it difficult to live for any time in lower and warmed climes. As such, the greatest population still live in the Far Mountains to the north of the Alderi Dominion. However, migratory packs have traversed the whole of the north of Sammerden, with populations in the Kingdom of Eyoit, Kyzt Confederation, and the Kingdom of D'zol.
Small groups are also known to inhabit the taller peaks of the Alderi mountains, and sometimes threaten Weldic hunting parties.
Lifespan
30 years
Average Height
Up to 5ft, dwarfing Tetra and Elosi alike, both of whom often live near their natural habitats.
