Myrkul

The old death god

Roy Talon - 10/13/2022

Appearance

Myrkul has been described as being a skeletal corpse, sometimes appearing with a tail to symbolize a Lizard-kin or Dragon-kin. Some believe he adopted the tail back in the prehistoric ages before time was recorded. His bones are bleach white and smooth, he usually has a large heavy ashen robe that drapes over his form. His eyes are two red embers that burn dimly in his skull.

Purpose

Myrkul was brought to life by the beliefs of the dinokin that inhabited the land of Mezek; before it was renamed Slisellvia. The inhabitants of the lands believed in death and the eternal sleep after life so much that their beliefs and ideas birthed Myrkul. He entered the world and took his seat as the death god, shuttling the dead into the afterlife. Being that he was one of the first gods of Treskri, he is considered an Old God. Eventually Myrkul became mad with power and confused as to his purpose. Turning on the mortals in order to bring eternal death to the lands.

Location and Home

Mezek was Myrkul’s home where he ruled over his Dino-kin followers and built a temple to himself; Temple of the Bygone, in the Forgotten Woods. An area of forest that had been a large burial ground for many of the natives in Mezek. Being that his life span was before the War of the Gods he didn’t have his own Death Domain that he dwelled in. This gave his home a divine and holy meaning among his cult and to this day the area in Slisellvia is plagued with undead that are uncovered by sand storms and plagued with unrestful slumber. This area is now known as the Restless Deserts.

Avatar of Death

Powers and Abilities

Myrkul has the powers of death, undead, resurrection, magical darkness and necrotic.
  • He uses the power of death to quickly kill his enemies, while death spells are more potent and harder to deal with it takes a lot to prepare for such spells. The spells are slow and take a lot out of him. However Death spells can be prepared as traps, making them much more effective.
  • Once he has killed an enemy, he will turn them undead and control them as his puppet. Taking a liking to powerful beings or beings he might respect or fear. He is able to control untold amounts of undead at once.
  • Being the god of death, he has the power to fully resurrect anyone he chooses; however he hates doing so. Having only done it a hand full of times in the past.
  • Using magical darkness to blind his opponents and create large areas of darkness as cover to fight in.
  • Most of his spells have a necrotic damage type, burning and decaying living tissue away until his opponents fall at his feet. Myrkul is extremely aggressive with his spells, preferring to kill quickly to bolster his forces of undead.

Weakness

Myrkul is a god of death, not having many weaknesses. However Radiant Damage tends to hurt him far more than most damage types. He tends to treat his undead forces as pawns and expendable, yet he would rather rely on them from the back lines, casting magic or running away. He also believes that absolute death is the best solution for mortals to live forever, that living creatures are pointless disgusting creatures.

History

Myrkul was once known as the God of death, he was a Primal God that was created by mortals long long ago. Myrkul was the ideology and manifestation of death and the after life, of dark restful sleep. Both feared and hated by mortals. He believed that all things should die and decay away, that life was meaningless and hollow. Once loved and worshiped, now mortals hate him because they believed him to be irrational, irresponsibly taking the life of any he chose. He didn’t discriminate when killing, slowly his rational mind caved into delusions of a grand picture. A world of death that would never truly die. Eventually the mortals grew tired of this treatment and begged and pleaded with other gods to vanquish Myrkul. The gods took pity on mortals and did just that without considering the consequences of their actions. Pelor, Roa, Mielikki, and Selune; attacked Myrkul and eventually killed him.   Before Myrkul was killed the idea of an afterlife with a chosen god was unheard of and all of the gods lived on the mortal realm, not having a domain or plane that they existed on. It wasn’t until after the War of the Gods that death itself was killed, the souls of the dead awoken from their slumber and the undead walked the world. People could not die, some transformed into monstrosities of curses or abominations brought on by the absence of death. Lycanthropy, Vampirism, Zombies, Ghosts, and Tormented Souls. It wasn’t until Myrkul was killed that the other gods saw that their actions brought pain and destruction to mortals. The death of hundreds of thousands of mortals affected their power drastically. For less worshipers meant less that believed in them and their power started to fade and become a shadow of what it once was.   Myrkul's death made the gods of good and the gods of evil see that waging war on the mortal realm would eventually lead to their death and the death of the world. So in order to fix their mistake they left the world of mortals to build an afterlife for their own followers. Taking on the role of a shepherd they created a place for many souls to lay down for their final resting place. The gods returned and purged the mortal realm of the dead and took the souls of the suffering to rest.   The gods named this period Nelithral; meaning death. It is a 25 day long month, known as the Death of Death; that has been engraved as a historical month. A short month of celebration, remembrance and mourning. It was also the start of a new era DD. During this time mortals dress up as monsters, creatures and undead. They roam the streets going house to house collecting treats and nick knacks to symbolize how the streets were filled with death. At the end of the month they have a feast and festival. Food, dancing, singing and fireworks carry on from morning till the dawn of the next day. Symbolizing the gods return to purge the lands of undead and to take the suffering souls into the stars to rest among them.   Since Myrkul; the god of death, died, the Death Domain has been left empty and unclaimed until recently; by Roy Talon. The name Myrkul seemingly forgotten among mortals over time.
