Garnwald - Beggar's District
Life in the Beggar's District is hard, depressing and often dangerous. Being outside the walls of Garnwald, the citizens here are not under the protection of the city guard, and thus several "protection services" have appeared. Armed thugs extort money from the population to keep them safe from other armed thugs, and who will hurt those who can't or won't pay. Most notorious are the "The Gold Swords" who are in a constant state of war with the "The Blue Pygmy Tribe". When those two gangs clash, they often beat up, and in some cases, kill, everybody not affiliated with them.
There are a lot of children living in the Beggar's District. Some live with their parents, while most of them are orphaned. These children will swarm anybody who looks richer than the average citizen of the district, some begging for money while the rest tries to lift a purse, a piece of jewellery or similar. Most of them are dressed in rags, with dirty hands and faces, and they will cry about being hungry or sick, or even both, in the hope of being rescued from poverty. Most of these children belong to one of the gangs, and if they end up in trouble they will signal to people around them for help.
Buildings in the Beggar's District are often made of whatever material the owner could find, they are one story high, with small windows and doors. The owner of a house will defend it as best as they can, and only abandon it if they are driven away by thugs or fire. Disease is all over the place, as there are no healers and few people with medical knowledge in the district. Some times the Church of the Benign Being goes from house to house in order to make sure plague doesn't spread, but they often arrive too late, and with too few people. Most of the people living in the district has a disdain for authority, as they feel overlooked, or ignored, by the wealthier citizens of Garnwald.
There are no official market in the Beggar's District, as the district itself is unofficial, but people gather at intersections to barter. There is also rumours of a black market, but if you don't live in the Beggar's District, or have friends who do, you will never find it. According to the rumours, you can buy both potent magic and exotic items at this black market, but you will be smart not to ask where it comes from as it is most likely stolen.
