The Badger Hole Tavern

Description: The building is two stories tall. It hasn't seen a repairman in years, the walls covered in old posters and grafitti. The ground floor windows are covered with shutters and barred, both to keep them safe, and to keep nosy passer-bys from looking in as the patrons like to be able to gamble and drink without beeing observed. The ground floor is brick and mortar with while the first floor is wood that hasn't been painted in decades. The whole building looks like it is about to topple over at any moment, yet it keeps standing.   Notable NPC's: At the door, you'll need to get past Brick, the Warforged bouncer, who doesn't let anybody inside. He got his name because he keeps a brick nearby to use as an improvised weapon if anybody makes trouble, as to not draw too much attention from the guards should they happen to be around. Unless he know who you are, you'll have to bluff your way inside.   Behind the bar, you will most likely meet Happy Joe, a cheerful halfling male, who keeps insisting that you'd rather buy "the good stuff" than the regular ale. The good stuff is bottled ale that he keeps in a dirt cellar just behind the bar, while the normal ale is on tap, served in not very clean glasses. (5cp for the good stuff, 1 cp for ale.) Happy Joe is a well of information, at the right price, but will also give false information in a heartbeat to those he deem unworthy, or those who doesn't pay for the information he has.   At their usual table you'll most likely find TwoToth, Datguy and Thoterguy, three shady human males, who spends their days gambling, gossiping and drinking. TwoToth is an enforcer for The Entepreneurs, and got his nickname because he keeps claiming two teeth as a trophy whenever he needs to beat some sense into Entrepeneurs who are out of line, or other citizens who the Entrepeneurs think needs to have some sense knocked into them. Datguy and Thoterguy are twins, and work as burglars for The Entrepeneurs. They earned their rather unusual nicknames by always blaming each other when caught by the guards, often using their rather high Deception skills to avoid arrest.

Purpose / Function

The Badger's Hole Inn is an inn and a gambling den. Although they do have a few rooms where people can stay over night, nobody really does as there are rumours that you'll wake up with less gear than you had going to sleep.

Design

The ground floor is one large rectangular room. The entrance is off to the left side of the south walls. Happy Joe's bar fills the entire east wall. On the west wall are the stairs leading up to the first floor. In the middle of the north wall there's a large hearth that warms the room during the winter. Scattered around the ground floor are long tables with benches, where people can sit to drink and gossip.    The first floor has a large room where people gamble, and on the east wall there are three rooms for rent. These rooms have beds and a wash stand, but nothing else.    The basement is a storage for ale, and other drinks. It fills half the area of the building.

Entries

The only way in is through the massive oak door guarded by Brick. All the windows are barred.

Sensory & Appearance

The entire building smells of stale ale, sweat and grime. In the summer, it's hot with stale air and in the winter it's almost warm enough unless you sit next to the hearth.

Denizens

Happy Joe is always present. The gambling room is always running one or more games, and the bar always has at least a handful of patrons who drink in silence.

Alterations

Happy Joe expanded the The Badger Hole Tavern by adding a wooden second floor. This is where the gambling happens. He also had a cellar dug out, to have a storage where the ale can be kept cold.

Architecture

This is one of few buildings in The Beggar's District that's built with bricks. It's got a brick chimney, metal bars over the windows, and a heavy oaken door. The first floor is built like the rest of the houses in the district, with wood that hasn't been painted in ages and windows that's so dirty it's a wonder they still let light in.

Defenses

Brick at the door is the main line of defence. If he thinks he's going to be overrun he will shout for help, and all the patrons will rush out to his aid. Apart from Brick, only other defence is the heavy oaken door and the bars over the windows.

History

The ground floor was originally built as a guard station, but was sold when the Queen decided that the guards should be stationed inside the walls instead of outside of them. It then passed from one owner to the next until Happy Joe bought it and opened The Badger Hole Tavern. Currently known for it's cheap ale, gambling and fights.
