The Winged Woods

"The trees there are of unusual size, sometimes being as large as mountains. This species of tree is a thorn to us in the scholarly community, it eludes classification by any scientific means. They are large enough to support entire cities of birdfolk, suspended in the branches. Where do they get their nutrients? How deep to the roots go?"   -exerpt from "Flora of Saoirse : A Guide to Plants", by Willow Seelenstar
The Winged Woods (also called "The Realm of the Diretrees) is a heavily forested region of Valka-Kar . It's home to the Birdfolk and the mountain-sized trees that they built their cities in.

Geographical Features

The Winged Woods is covered mostly in giant trees. These trees can range from the size of a large redwood to the size of a small mountain. It's because of the size of these trees that the Birdfolk that call them home can build their cities.   The Winged Woods has one large river forming its northern border called The Wet Feather River. This river splits into two at Fort Talon. The southern running river is rarely called the Annor River, but most call both forks by it's parent rivers name.   A region of the southern Winged Woods is mountainous, with high peaks and beautiful pine forest.   The Silent Islands sit off the coast to the north eastern Winged Woods, consisting of nine total islands. These islands are unusually dreary.   To the north lies The Meadowlands, a span of flat meadows and fields. North of that is Coldwall, where the weather of the nearby Kalazam spills over and causes the land to freeze.

Locations

The Crestlands

The Crestlands are the heartlands of the Winged Woods. Most of the population lives in the Crestlands or in the Middesfly. The Crestlands has some of the tallest trees in the Winged Woods, therefore it has the most space to build cities and towns.

The Middlesfly

The Middlesfly is the other half of the central heartlands of the Winged Woods. While the trees here aren't as tall as those in the Crestlands, they are dense and strong with many branches. Most of the population lives in The Middesfly or the Crestlands.

Waterspear

Waterspear is protected on both sides by the forks of the Wet Feather River. This protection, along with the ability to trade up and down these rivers, has made Waterspear a prosporus area in both trade and culture. The people of Waterspear are sometimes accused of being aloof and flighty, but there are few that can deny that some of the best mages of the Winged Woods came from Waterspear.

The Griffon Peaks

The Griffon Peaks are the moutainous region in the southern part of the Winged Woods. The hunting ground in the lower stones of the Griffon Peaks are all but sacred ground to the people of the Griffon Peaks.

The Meadowlands

The Meadowlands is home to the Court of Sparrows, and thus has a very high population. The Meadowlands is also where the trees begin to thin, eventually giving way to lush green meadows and grasslands.

Coldwall

North of the Meadowlands is Coldwall, where the icy cold weather of the Onguul Mountains creeps into the land and freezes the earth.

Inhabitants

The Birdfolk are the primary inhabitants of the Winged Woods. They live in the high treetops and build their cities into the branches of the trees.   A few human settlments exist at the forest floor of the Winged Woods, although few of them survive for long.

History

The Pecking War

The Pecking Wars was a series of battles and wars between the independent houses, barons and lords of the Winged Woods, before they were unified under any single banner or monarch.
