S12. Behold...we are screwed... Report
General Summary
Marpenoth
Jareth took the first hit the aberration aimed at him, a rapid-fire blast of death. He fell in a single attack. The rest of the party braced for the worst after seeing Jareth die right in front of them. But then suddenly he stood back up, a changed man in more ways than one. I am sure there is a story there, but we shall leave it to Jareth to tell.
And the battle began.
Heroes attacked and retreated, fighting as much as they could while they regrouped after meeting this unexpected foe, the so-called "pet" of the one-eyed humanoid that had previously sought to trade secrets for magic.
Each took their shot with varied effect. Ozus commanded the critter to "drop" and since it was floating and had no arms to carry anything, ir allowed gravity to pull it back down into the green mist in the crevasse.
The monster gave chase. They kept attacking and tried to sort out how best to get to safety. None but a few very mildly wounded, they made their way back down their narrow corridor they entered from, and all traveling at different speeds, some trying to act as rear guard. The floating ball of nastiness with quadra-snail-eyes kept pressing the attack while Jareth aimed to keep it from getting past him to the others. Sir Nesbit suffering from a PTSD moment, and fearing he would lose others of his team while he fled turned back to rejoin the fight and guard Jareth's retreat. Just before he arrived Jareth used a new ability to Inflict wounds on the thing, and it screamed and shriveled into a gooey deflated balloon onto the ground. The one-eyed creature while peaking around the corner examined Jareth with his supernatural sight, and seemed to learn something new.
In the cistern room, the drake and a stranger to the group, who would come to be known as Kally, were talking, apparently the drake sharing all kind of interesting things: the names of all the party members, their current state of flight, cookie recipes, and gossip from the woods. Torgan called her out, feeling it dangerous and strange that this woman would enter the area so casually while they were in battle. She scolded them for retreating and called up on them to be brave and charge again, and flank the monster.
With Sir Nesbit now guarding the flank, the monk flew down the hall and into the other room. While Kally and Kenenas headed back down the corridor toward the cavern.
Coincidentally, the party members that could see in the dark took the long way around through another corridor, across a pit, and through the crypt to circle around and flank the monster. Unaware of the terrain and pitfalls, as it were, in the dungeon, Ozus had a slow time of following and would arrive only after all the action was over. This is probably a good thing as he is not as battle-ready as most of the others.
Sir Nesbit fell into the crevasse while trying to leap over it. The obsessed one-eye leapt down into the green mist with him exclaiming in undercommon for Nesbit to stay away from "it" and it was "his treasure" and not Nesbit's. While laying among the bones at the bottom Sir Nesbit spotted a glint of shiny metal through the mist with his sputtering torchlight.
Down in the crevasse alone together the creature opened his super large super natural eye and peered into Nesbit's soul, suddenly learning something that caused his single eye to widen in shock, and horror, and he started screaming in undercommon, "no-no-no-no-NOOOOO!"
Kenenas tried to join Nesbit at the bottom in the green mist, doing so ungracefully. After several of the heroes got in some damage on the thing, Kally finally dropped down, landing the killing blow with her Pike.
Sir Nesbit found the glinting item to be a sword that thrummed with some magic and bore the legendary name "Talon" on it's blade. Kenenes also found a small check with more treasure in it.
The party also eventually discovered that the green mist which was not safe to remain in for long, seemed to be silling in through some kind of crack in the crevasse wall at the bottom. Jareth tried to fill it in to see if he could stop or slow the ingress of the mist, but it wasn't working....and then he heard a raspy whisper through the crack say, "Whoooooo isssss there....."
That was enough for him to want to get out of there pretty quick. Indeed, all of them clambered out as quickly as they could. Suddenly, the mist seemed to explode upward in a sickly green cloud that opened into a misty, bony, clawed hand of some sort, and a deep, hollow, ghostly voice bellowed.
"I SEE YOU!"
And the mist dissipated and the room fell silent...and the last torch sputtered out.
