Long berms of clay were brought in to make long lakes of sea water, at first it was heated by the natural heat from the local volcanic activity. While in more modern times terracotta, ceramic, and iron piping was placed in the lakes under the clay to increase the heating to speed up the process of desalinization of the sea water for salt production.
