Apseldian General
The General of Apseldia’s army is elected by a vote every two years (alternating with new Speaker of the Council elections).
The title is highly coveted and holds great prestige. The position of General usually falls to a popular retired adventurer. There is no term limit, and the incumbency rate for the Generalship is high with some well-liked Generals holding the office for decades.
Qualifications
Be a good warrior, a good tactician, and a good leader. Above all be popular.
Duties
Maintain security and morale.
Responsibilities
Overseeing training and drills of militia. Supervise the maintenance of the armory and the war fleet.
Benefits
The Generalship comes with a small stipend. The stipend is usually donated to charity because most Generals were independently wealthy before being elected. The real benefit is prestige and fame. It is also joked that Generals don't need to carry money because people offer them free clothing, food, and drinks whereever they go.
Grounds for Removal/Dismissal
An emergency council vote can unseat a General but it requires 75% of the vote to unseat a General. More likely, if a General needs to be replaced, they find themselves assassinated. It hasn't been proven but one politically savvy but militarily incompetent General did die in a suspicious accident.
History
Apseldia maintains a fully volunteer military and has done so since the nation's inception. While the last hundred years have been peaceful, the first few generations of Apseldia's history saw the scrappy nation fighting for it's life facing at least four major invasions. This of course led to many early generals becoming legendary figures, their statues dotting the city today.
Lately given the relative peace, the position of General is now largely an honorary position but most Generals take their military responsibilities seriously. Apseldia is still surrounded by potentially hostile powers.
